Certainly was and looks like it may be added to the 5+ list.

Also looks like Etna seems to be spewing tonight as well...not thinking the quake and it are connected though.

While I don't discount your conclusion “that our current uptick in activity could very well be associated with the demise of the Farallon Plate” at all, I leans towards a causation that is cyclic in nature such as maybe a periodically occurring increase in geothermal activity. This could tie-in nicely with the occurrence of ice-ages though these instead may be caused by a decreased in solar activity, earth precession or combination of all of the above. lol

Earthquake do seem to affect nearby volcanoes as was witnessed in Japan and in other parts of the world recently.

I considered that but....there are few reports that are totally intriguing to me...

One the quake last year along the subduction area of the farallon in mexico. The quake in Haiti. The quake recently in Japan and also the quake at the Kulu subduction area in Aleutians. Now take that along with the reports of off shore humming as well in Ohio, Florida Quebec and eastern pa and NJ.

Now at in the quake swarms from Arkansas, Quebec and Ohio and well I can paint a pretty concise picture using the demise of the Farallon and what that would mean to bordering plates and intercontinental noise....lol

Those events are intriguing but could be the effect of an even larger event such as a buildup of heat within the Earth. IMO, periodic increases or fluctuations of thermal energy levels within the Earth may better explain why global cyclic increases in earthquakes, volcanoes, core melt/mag. pole shift, increased undersea venting occur and maybe even lead to an answer to why we see periodic ice-ages occurring throughout the Earth's history.

Certainly, your theory may well explain recent activity and events you've mentioned. I just don't see how it could explain the bigger picture. Maybe I need to study on it more. :)

No I am not discounting globally the effects you are following but let me try and explain how I think the effects of the Farallon had on the North American Plate.

Obviously the subduction of a large part of the Farallon created the Rockies and such but I believe that it also floated the North American Plate and it's movement is somewhat accented by it's subduction to this day. I also believe that the North American Plate's movement is the most dominant player effecting global tectonics and volcanics.

Acting like an Anchor to some degree and a buffer, the Farallon for ages has dictated the quite and relatively cool nature of North American Continent east of the divide. Temp records down in depth pretty much outline the Farallon leftovers that a few scientists believe subducts into the mantle near if not completely under the New Madrid Zone.

Now imagine if the Plate was now able to move with less resistance to the west due to the depletion of this Farallon anchor? Certainly we have seen at times in history huge quakes caused by this easing before. Like in South Carolina the New Madrid quakes.

This easing would also cause the African Plate to separate further and quicker as well at the Mid Atlantic ridge which of course spans towards Iceland. This of course would explain the Nabro and the intense volcanics in Iceland.

The effects on the Caribbean Plate are a no brainer for as we know it was the Caribbean Plate that buckled the Appalachians to create the vertical mountain range in Arkansas called the Ouachita Mountains.

Now take into account the old subduction points where some scientists say one can easily see the remnants of Kula Plate/Farallon. I believe the swarm and subsequent large quake near Mexicali. I also believe that the Aleutian quake last month was in part a product of the subduction of Kula.

In my mind of course I can get anything to fit, but I really do believe that there is enough observation in the theory to hang my hat on.

Combining your theory with mine, leads to the thought that other plate "anchors" could also be weakening. If they let go or slip, we could be in for a WILD ride. Might explain the "how come" of a few Biblical prophesies.

If the North American plate is the dominant player (as you say) and breaks loose, the other plates may be forced loose as well. An abrupt change in the Earth's gyroscopic precession path, an imbalance in the crust or core, or just the simple release of stress built up over eons could set the plates in motion.

I've often wondered if slow upheaval is really what caused vertical strata.

or a brief span of accelerate movement until a point in time the works gum up again.....

Here's a pic you will like....spans both our thoughts...lol

Exactly! It seems to me, what ever caused that had to have been pretty cataclysmic.

Imagine if just for a year or perhaps even a decade the plate motion is twice or three times their normal range.

That’s a lot of extra energy.

Thanks! Excellent article!!

I've notice a lot of small earthquakes forming lines that point toward Yellowstone.

Something like 90% of active volcanos and earthquakes occur around the Pacific Rim

It was given the name “ring of fire” a very long time ago just because of that

nothing new to see here, move along.
