this is a computer generated automatic message. Current assessment is there are no warnings or watches in effect, even thought large and potentially shallow enough to have created one.

I could be wrong, but I think you’re misreading things. There is no Pacific-wide warning, but there *is* a tsunami warning in effect for Tonga and New Zealand.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS
TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTLINES OF THE REGION
NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL GAUGES NEAREST THE
REGION AND REPORT IF ANY ADDITIONAL TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY. THE
WARNING WILL NOT EXPAND TO OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC UNLESS
ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED TO WARRANT SUCH AN EXPANSION.

The scariest thing about living in NZ for two years (besides the danger of being hacked to death by Maoris) is the friggin’ earthquakes! My friends in NZ keep telling me to leave CA because of The Big One and I say, “You first.”

Not very big, but there none the less.

I'm just a rank amateur looking around at Google Maps, but the geography surrounding Raoul Island doesn't look conducive to a large tsunami. The ocean is relatively deep there, with a fairly steep rise to the island. It reminds me some of Diego Garcia, which, though right in line for the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, suffered zero damage and no tsunami. It just went right through/around. On the other hand, catastrophic damage was done in areas like Thailand with significant shallows and gentle underwater slopes rising to the coastline.

If my read is correct, New Zealand (including Auckland) would see a more significant tsunami from this. No way of knowing how much more significant (hopefully not much), and like I said the major disclaimer here is that I don't actually know what I'm doing, but that's my concern.

I guess we'll know soon enough; ETA in Auckland is two hours from now.

Missed it by THAT much!
People were saying they thought the next big one would be Alaska... I called the next big on to be the NE Australia/Coral Sea region...

Thanks Bud!

Little unusual no aftershocks just yet. Might be a forerunner.

Yeah happened right after I posted that....lol

However the wave signature either suggests a much weaker main quake or we indeed just are seeing a forequake sequence. I have not seen it lowered yet at far as the magnitude so we shall see if that fault ruptures close by even larger.
