Nawwwwwwwwwww

All things are as have been since at least Noah.

The naysayers say so.

And being omniscient, they KNOW EVERYTHING. Just ask them.

The aftershocks are worth a thread in and of themselves - similar to the Japanese aftershocks which are still occurring.

Earth is shakin!

Below is my updated chart of worldwide magnitude 5+ earthquakes. The last column is projected for 2011 based on the first 6 months of 2011 data from USGS. Note that we've exceeded the past yearly average number of worldwide 5+ earthquakes (1,500) with a current count close to 1,600 at the halfway mark for 2011.

The last column is projected for 2011 based on the first 6 months of 2011 data from USGS.

No scientific or logical basis for doing that. Also, first six months greatly skewed by Japan.

I lost that graph that had that abscence of 7.2+ quakes over 30+yrs.....

Were we on the Fukushima thead with that?

I'm not sure I agree with you on the above, so let's just call it interesting. :)

As for your followup statement: "Also, first six months greatly skewed by Japan", I do agree to some extent. However, as you can see from the chart below, large earthquakes in the past did not significantly affect the normal cycle of 5+ earthquakes. So what is different this time?

This is not the one but it will illustrate still the point of the downturn over the last century of large earthquakes.

This one highlights total energy expenditure.

I wished I had saved the satellite image of the volcano in Africa you posted. It was awesome with the shadow from the plume and all. I didn't realize it was real-time and now probably gone forever. :(

Thanks, it seems to also indicate the frequency of earthquakes occur in cycles and that we’re headed for an uptick.

Exactly...

To the point where most will not comprehend the possible consequences of say an early 1900 period now.

Still thinkin the Kermadec quake sequence has not tipped it’s scale....could be way off on that but we shall see.

You may well be right about the Kermadec quake. Any possibility it could be related to a dormant volcano as it seems pretty localized? Many old volcanos are now stirring all around the globe!

Another phenomenon in the news is the ever increasing speed of the magnetic pole shift. IMO, a precession compensation by the core or core melt might be responsible. Either could mean significant consequences for us Earth dwellers.

I think they're going to miss their estimated location for the mag. north pole in 2015!

Certainly the quakes are in the zone for volcanic activity but I am not sure if there is a connection direct or not. I just know the signature that came off the main quake yesterday was very much weaker than I have normally seen from that depth and size.

Currently and with anticipation I have come to a conclusion that our current uptick in activity could very well be associated with the demise of the Farallon Plate(finally) under the east coast of the USA. There are many factors that make me think such but suffice to say it could be interesting times these next two years and just not along suspect areas we all know....lol
