John Phillip Walker Lindh, my son, was raised a Roman Catholic, but converted to Islam when he was 16 years old. He has an older brother and a younger sister. John is scholarly and devout, devoted to his family, and blessed with a powerful intellect, a curious mind, and a wry sense of humour.
Labelled by the American government as "Detainee 001" in the "war on terror", John occupies a prison cell in Terre Haute, Indiana. He has been a prisoner of the American government since 1 December 2001, less than three months after the terror attacks of 9/11.
John is entirely innocent of any involvement in the terror attacks, or any allegiance to terrorism. That is not disputed by the American government. Indeed, all accusations of terrorism against John were dropped by the government in a plea bargain, which in turn was approved by the US district court in which the case was brought.
Despite its proud history as a stable constitutional democracy, the US has, for 10 years, been affected by post-traumatic shock, following the horrific events of 11 September 2001. I can find no other explanation for the barbaric mistreatment and continued detention of a gentle young man like John Lindh.

To try to convince the world that he did not believe in terrorism against America proves the complicity of the father and the whole family. Yeh, he just went to Afghanistan to fight the Northern Alliance after getting trained as a jihadist. Did your son not know that Bin Laden was wanted in connection to the Khobar towers bombing, and the simultaneous embassy bombings....and was on the FBI most wanted list...BEFORE September 11th? Sulayman al-Faris (Lindh) was captured by American troops as they invaded Afghanistan in something like late 2001 or early 2002. He had gone to al Qaeda to learn how to be a terrorist. He joined the terrorist army.
There isn’t really much to say other than this to Lindh’s father who calls his son a gentle, peace-loving soul. I think it’s Lindh’s dad who left his mom and went fully gay when the boy was in his formative years. If my memory is correct about the gay dad, then it sounds like Lindh went off the deep end in response to his dad’s going off the deep end.
But apart from that it is instructive to stand aside and observe a well-educated, middle-class liberal suburbanite enlist the vocabulary of touchy-feely liberalism in defense of a son who was utterly corrupted by evil. Many posters have seen the real issue: John Lindh was raised to be vulnerable to the seduction of an evil influence to which he succumbed and did evil and was complicit in evil.
Why was his son, John Lindh, left defenseless and naked to the siren of Islam? Even today his father cannot bring himself to associate jihad with evil much less contemplate Islam as the efficient producing cause of that evil.
We conservatives ought to use the occasion of this defense of an American who turned against his own country and his own people to explore the seductive power of cults. If you want to know why liberals condone communists and are utterly indifferent to their own hypocrisy, consider that liberalism, no less than Al Qaeda or the Taliban, is a cult although less virulent in action and in its mens rea. The more one progresses from squishy suburban liberalism of the kind exemplified by Lindh's father through Marxism, as exhibited by Barack Obama, and even onto out and out communism, as exemplified by Castro or Chavez, one sees more starkly the nearly irresistible power of the cult.
If one believes that John Lindh was motivated by admirable human impulses to do what he did in Afghanistan, one simply does not understand the power of the cult. Once the victim succumbs, the endgame is almost unstoppable and the victim himself is clearly incapable of stopping it until he straps on the suicide vest. Such was the fate of John Lindh. Under slightly different circumstances, he would have been a suicide bomber. As it was he was comfortable participating in murder.
If you want to know why on a companion thread we are so frustrated by a political situation in which Barack Obama and the Democrats are forcing us into a suicidal fiscal crisis, consider that we are dealing with a cult mentality and we are trying to treat it with logic. To a group in America which has suspended the logic, we call them Democrats, liberals or progressives, it does not matter that we have a spending problem. The reaction is not cerebral but visceral. The reaction is to have resort to the shibboleths of the cult and so, to them, we have a taxing problem.
I think we have to understand the enemy here at home as well as in the mountain fastness of Waziristan and we have to adjust our tactics and strategy accordingly.

One of my biggest concerns when Obama is shown the door is that he will commute this a-hole’s sentence. I’d have to fight for my place in line for Lindh’s welcome home party should the unthinkable come to pass. Of course, if Obama resigns or is impeached before 2013, then the above is a moot point.
His gentle islamic son knew a murderous prison prison riot was planned, and said nothing to CIA officer John Spann, who interviewed him that day (probably with some compassion for a fellow American) and who, unprepared, was then later killed by the rioters
