a very interesting article but I wish the author had pursued the Trekkie angle further.

The depth of evil here is almost beyond comprehension. What a cruel and abominable crime.

RIP Leibby and prayers for his family.

My formal studies were focussed on formal logics

And your thesis was on confusing issues?

I'm not worthy to post to you.

I hung out with a Dungeons and Dragons crowd for about 2 weeks in college. A good percentage were either homosexuals or satan worshipers (and openly so). And this was the late 70’s.

Definitely men who did not date or have normal relationships with women, and lived in a fantasy world.

I went to a SciFi convention where they brought in vendors from all over the US. Star Trek, Star Wars, and D&D stuff. I love Star Wars and Star Trek, but the people at this convention were creepy, even to a nerd like me.

The first time in my life I felt like I was in the presence of evil.

“I was raised in Boro Park Brooklyn. It was always such a wonderful, quiet neighborhood with Jews, Italians, Greeks and Irish people living side by side helping one another.”

#####

I’m not familiar at all with the geography of Brooklyn, but my Italian Mom grew up in a similar ONCE nice neighborhood of civilized people-above a fish market, just across the street from Ebbetts Field.

It’s not fair to paint all Orthodox or Hasidic Jews with the same brush. Only a very few sects do not revere Israel in its current state.

I am praying for this little boy’s family. The guilt they must feel is horrendous, letting him walk so far so alone so little.

And the little lad, lost, goes up to a nice bearded “religious” man he thinks he can trust. Only it turns out to be a true sicko. I don’t know if this creep is a pedophile but they say he is crazy, that his whole family is somehow “off.” What a hypocrite, going to shul, covering his head, probably keeping the dietary laws. G-d cares little for those things if this is how you choose to behave when a child comes to you for help in getting to his parents. I hope he gets the worst penalty there is in NY.

No I’m sure that not hold those views however it is stunning that any of them do don’t you think? It boggles my mind.

That little boy’s last moments were no doubt full of terror. Such a betrayal of trust because you’re right, he probably trusted that sick s.o.b. for a few minutes.

It’s all disgusting and horrifying. After reading the article about his disapperance last nite and then waking up to this, was absolutely gut wrenching.

Not often that a Jew goes this far off his nut.

That's an interesting observation. I wonder what the proportion of Jewaish psycho killers is, relative to the population as a whole. Some of the most infamous serial killers in New York's recent history were Jewish . . . I'd include David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam killer) and Joel Rifkin (killed more than 20 prostitutes on Long Island back in the early 1990s) among these.

Because of their studious cultural bent, Jews tend to be better off financially. (No they didn’t steal the world, they just worked smarter.) Mental health problems would be more likely to be addressed when it is less likely to be in a money pinch, like do I eat or do I see the doctor?

Good point, but I would also suspect that the incidence of psychotic behavior is more of a problem in urban areas. Something about living among large numbers of people makes a lot of people nuts. It may not always manifest itself openly, but I’ve worked in New York City a lot over the years and I would say that the average New Yorker — even wealthy ones — is quite a bit more likely to be mentally unstable than the population as a whole. That’s just my own observation, mind you.

Just a small note. The people you saw are part of an anti-Zionist Haredi group called Neturei Karta. They number between maybe 4,500 - 5,000 and their beliefs are in no way indicative of all Haredim.

There is also a documentary film, “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America”.

I suppose it all depends on what you call a “good percentage”. Probably a slightly higher percentage of the guys I’ve gamed with wound up gay than the general population, which I suppose makes it a “good percentage” but really not more than 4 or 5 percent. As for the satan worship, during the height of the idiot cry that D&D was satanic a LOT of us faked it, but no more of them were really into abnormal religions than any other group, and most of the oddball were wiccans not satanist. Screwing with the norms is a time honored tradition among “outcast” groups, whether the group is outlaw bikers, gamers, SCA, or metal heads making people who clearly already don’t like them uncomfortable is a time honored past time.

Now for the convention front. Yeah, there’s always that cluster of the really hard core screwed up people at the cons. Whether it’s the 300 pounders that only bathe when caught out in the rain, or the sexual deviants who have found that a crowd of people that have a hard time getting laid in the first place tends to be fairly “willing”. Evil though, not so much, and it’s really only about 10% that have “issues” of some form or another. Weird to be sure, but again you gotta remember it’s outcast groups now in a situation where they’re in charge, the out number the norms, and most of the norms work for the hotel and are therefore being paid to make the outcasts happy (within reason of course). It’s a situation where people, as Jimi Hendrix said, let their freak flag fly. To the uninitiated, even for the uninitiated that’s arguable a member of the group, it can be a bit scary the first time. But much like the infamous Black Hole at Raiders games out in the regular world they’re actually regular people who just get together periodically and turn the social filters off.

Would that be Dragon.con in Atlanta? I am thinking about going this year and taking my girlfriends kids (13 thru 17yrs old) whom are all into sci-fi at what I would consider a reasonably healthy level.

Just looking for intel on Dragon.con - never been. I want to go just to people watch.
