As debt-ceiling crisis grows, McConnell warns default could 'destroy' GOP (Then put it on Obama)
LA Times ^ | 7/13/2011 | James Oliphant

Reporting from Washington — As negotiators reconvened at the White House on Wednesday for another round of debt talks, House Republicans appeared to dig in even deeper in their resistance to any sort of deal to raise the federal debt ceiling even as one party leader foretold disaster for the GOP if its members failed to act.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader who has proposed a fallback plan that would likely ensure the $14.3-trillion debt limit would be raised, said in a radio interview that a default by the United States could critically damage his party heading into the 2012 elections.

A default, McConnell told talk show host Laura Ingraham, “destroys your brand.”

The Kentucky senator said the economic consequences of a default would give President Obama an opportunity to blame the GOP for the country’s economic straits. “Look, he owns the economy,” McConnell said. “He’s been in office for three years. We refuse to let him entice him into co-ownership of a bad economy.”

McConnell said that at this point the GOP had two choices: Either make a bad deal — from their perspective — with Obama or take the country into default, which, McConnell suggested would do even more damage to the party. He compared the situation to 1995, when the GOP forced a government shutdown.

“We know that’s going to happen. Just like we knew shutting down the government in 1995 was not going to work for us,” he said. “It helped Bill Clinton get reelected. I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected.”

Across the Capitol, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) sounded his own kind of alarm, saying that a default would take the country into uncharted territory.

What brand? The Republicans haven't stood for anything in 15 years.

It’s the hacks in both parties, like McConnell, that have us in the shape we are in now. For decades, no matter what party was in control, they ARE the ones who got us to this point.

They are all incapable of dealing with it, because they created it. Only new members, not currupted by DC, can save this country now. Which mean, the likes of The Gobbler and Bonehead MUST be put out to pasture.

Does Mitch play an instrument by chance?

Maybe he can play for the Emperor personally, Orrin can assist on banjo, Boehner can whistle. ;-)

There is NO downside to the Republicans staying firm on this.

Exactly....but there sure is political loss for Ob if this isn't a go. He's getting pressure Internationally now as well. 'IMF" has chimmed in, and now "Moody's" is pouring on the heat to lower the US rating. So Bo's putting the pressure on Seniors....knows they will call their Representatives....they startle easily and Bo knows that.

Only a coward would knowingly force future generations into debt slavery rather than face simple budgeting facts. Since Mitch McConnell has no stomach for this, Mitch McConnell should get out of the way or step down. Mitch McConnell is not the Republican Party.

Yea, I saw Obama gets his pants in a knot if people raise their voices....evidences once again that he thinks he’s “King”.......he walks out...like a chicken.

It is said if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen......so he can always leave the Presidency..I wouldn’t shed a tear...I’d be rejoicing!

The GOP. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory since 1948.

Well Carney did say earlier today that he (Obama) didnt like to be “yelled” at. Bless his heart

If somebody's yelling at Oburkel I'm all for it. And whoever it is has my admiration and support.

So what are we supposed to do Mitch? Cower in the corner and accept whatever the Dems want to dish out? Spare me your next fundraising letter about how you are fighting for me. You are either a liar or incredibly ineffective.

Actually, it may be a good thing he walked out. I think it's his way of trying to not lose control. He knows his irrational, seething, pent-up anger could explode in terrifying ways once he does lose his self control, and, I'm afraid one day it will. Maybe soon.

These RINOs are so fixated on 1995. It was a different economy then, alternative media was still in its infancy.

Now the taxpayers are more aware that we can't keep spending. Any government shutdown will be blamed on 0bama. People know, and Barry even said it last year, a recession is not the time to raise taxes on anyone. If I were in charge of the GOP, I'd tell this kenyan punk, if you want to raise taxes on anyone, we scrap 0bamacare. Tear it out root and branch, then and only then will we discuss raising taxes.

I agree... butvwalking out just shows he’s not the leader he’s trying so hard to USE this crisis for. Leaders stand the heat...OB cannot.

But I’m still glad he did so...just shows his colors once more. He’s tried to use this whole affair for his political gain and I am hoping against all hope it completely backfires on him.

...unless he says otherwise. He's actually worse than Kerry and NcCain in that respect. He just gives it a different name.

Fox just reported Obama basically walked out of todays meeting... “Left abruptly”...as was stated. So somebody’s stepping on his toes.

Apparently Cantor stepped on his toes. Good for him.

I like Cantor...he’s unafraid to go toe to toe with Barry....and there’s a few others willing and able to do so as well. Sometimes I do think if the more “seasoned” republicans would get out of the way we might very well see some action on that which needs it.

Remember Barry said they were going to take off their gloves....well, let them and let the young pups take him down. The oldsters can nurse there wounds and send them back into the fight.

Drudge has it..politco take...Cantor was like a bull dog though of course politico makes him sound like a kid and says Boehner needs to rein him in...I say cut him loose!

But Cantor seems to enjoy going toe to toe...with the ol” BHO.

No doubt they had “words” with barry saying no president would sit thru these negotiations that Barry had to take...not even Reagan.

Did Mitch vote for TARP? or against it? I should know and it should be obvious, but its not. It could be either one. That is the problem that will destroy the Republican party.

When you can’t look at an issue and know which way the Republicans will vote, then there is no compass, no basis, and no need for a Republican party.
