California Supreme Court rules in fight over plastic shopping bags

Anti-plastic-bag forces got a boost today when the California Supreme Court ruled that an environmental impact report is not necessary before a city or county bans the use of plastic shopping bags.

The decision strikes down rulings by trial and appellate courts in Los Angeles in the legal fight over an ordinance enacted in 2008 by the south coastal city of Manhattan Beach banning "point-of-sale plastic carry-out bags."

Both courts said the city had to prepare an EIR before implementing its ban.

"We disagree," a unanimous Supreme Court stated.

The liberals are insane... first they bar cutting down trees, then they bar oil drilling, then they bar plastic bags distribution, and NOW they are BACK to forcing us to cut down trees to make shopping bags...next they will arrest all of us who use paper bags due to the ban of plastic bags. Wow, what a bunch of idiots and insane fools.

No plastic bags? Then chop down some trees to make paper bags! Everyone knows that chopping down trees has no effect on the environment.

studies have shown that canvas bags and shopping carts

have lots of bacteria.

78% of carts have fecal matter, from babies.

No no no. You’ve got to have a reuseable bag made from hemp fibers.

Nevermind that it’ll get all nasty over time, harboring bacteria and other kinds of protein units.

Just try washing it with phosphate free soap. Lotsa luck.

"Substantial evidence and common sense support the city's determination that its ordinance would have no significant environmental effect."

That just might become a precedent that the left comes to regret.

Busy bodies. I reuse my plastic grocery bags for trash bags and dog poop bags. First my toilet, then my light bulbs and my right to breed my dog, soon my trash bags. They are never ending busy bodies.

The same jerks who are tying to ban plastic are the ones who forced plastic onto us in the first place. Paper bags were bad, bad, bad, plastic bags were good, good, good. Now plastic is bad. Unintended consequences, happens every time liberals push their silly a**ed green agendas.

But be sure to not use a low flow toilet. It will take 3 or 5 flushes and we want to flush them quickly.

So do they have glass bottles for the milk? Oh, I forgot, cows aren’t allowed in California any more. If I lived in California I would buy my groceries in one of the states to the east. Take some styrofoam coolers along and buy enough to last at least two weeks - make it a family trip.

"Faces" or "feces"?

Without those hand sized plastic bags they will have tons of it just rolling around the sidewalks and streets in weeks.

The state already had a problem with the idea of spraying tertiary sewage on the highway medians ~ made it smell like a latrine everywhere.

This will not help.

A couple of years ago when traveling on AMTRAK I saw huge amounts of plastic shopping bags hung up in trees mostly in eastern Montana and North Dakota where it’s pretty windy most of the time. These are the bags those environmental weenies wanted us to use instead of cutting down trees for paper bags. Now CA wants to go back to cutting down trees for paper bags. Brilliant.

The plastic shopping bags used at our local Alberstons are just crap..they rip and don’t hold anything. Worse yet are the baggers..they just toss things in your shopping cart...bu the time you get to your car you need to re bag everything. I would rather have the paper bags, I use them and re use them for all sorts of things. I hate hauling those cloth bags..by the time you have enough of them for what you are shopping for you are nearly out of room for the groceries..
