Sheriff: 4-Year-Old Shot in Head While Fishing With Dad

A 4-year-old boy who was fatally shot while fishing with his father in northeastern Indiana was struck in the head by an errant bullet, a sheriff and a family friend said.

Wells County Sheriff Monte Fisher told The Associated Press on Sunday that Jacob Michuda was shot in the head late Friday night while he and his father were fishing from a pier at a pond outside Ossian, a rural community about 15 miles south of Fort Wayne.

Trisha Ulmer told The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne for a Sunday story that the boy's mother told her the boy was shot in the temple.

Fisher said an autopsy was performed Saturday.

Forty-six-year-old neighbor Bruce Pond was being held without bond on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide and due to appear in court Monday. Fisher told the Bluffton News-Banner alcohol was involved and Pond apparently shot at a light on the pier where the father and son were fishing.

"I think it was just a freak accident," Ulmer said.

Police and medics were called to the scene at 11:07 p.m. Friday. Police said an ambulance took the boy to a hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. Saturday. Police arrested Pond later that day.

Amen, this is the kind of stuff that really breaks the heart. As a father, and I have a son who’s almost four, just the thought of something like this is enough to bring tears to my eyes. Please Lord, give this family your grace and mercy.

Damn... Just Damn! My grandson (6 years old) was out this weekend fishing with his dad. This one hits too close to home, time to give him another hug.

I’ll spot the 4 and 5 year olds as being too young to be responsible (and blame the parents) but the 11 year old should spend about 30 years locked away.

My son just turned 5.
Words completely fail me at times like this.
You are so right.
I would be replaying the events over and over for the rest of my life, and it would change nothing.
Only in Christ is there any hope at times like this.
And to one day be reunified.

May little Jacob be playing with the angels in Heaven and may Bruce Pond rot in prison.

There is no defense for this, NONE.

Aiming at a light and just so happen to hit a little boy in the temple? BS I say. It was accidentally on purpose.

You are so right, only in Christ is there comfort.
Our 18 year old son who was about to start his second year of college was killed in a car accident with another guy the same age who had come from a grauation party and had been drinking.
There is no denying God the souls he wants in His arms.
I wrote a letter to the court to have mercy upon the young man, for it made no sense to ruin two lives by putting him away for years on end.
He is now out, working, and helping teach young people the devistating effects of bad decisions like drinking and driving.

I miss our boy but don’t wish him back, for what Christian would rather have their child in this sinful world than in the loving arms of our heavenly Father.
To God be the glory, and may He bless you all.

Bless you for your post!
That is such amazing evidence of the goodness and faithfulness
of our God.
To hear you speak with such clarity about an incredible tragedy gives me
hope that I ( through His strength alone) can handle anything in this life.
If you don't mind would you please pray for my son Reagan who will be delivered in October? The sonogram shows a cleft lip and probably a cleft palate.
We know there is much worse to deal with, but right now it is our
challenge.
He will have two very sweet and loving siblings to help us with him.
But we need God's strength more than ever.
Thanks and God bless you in every way.

We all have been forgiven so much by our loving Father. Your mercy upon that young fellow is evidence to God’s divine mercy towards you.

God Bless you for being a beacon of light in a dark world.

My son is 4 and my eyes welled up at the pain of those parents. I just snuck in my son’s room to see that he was OK after reading pf this tragedy.
