Splitsville (Perry wanted Texas gone from the Union?)
The New York Times ^ | July 26, 2011 | Alex Beam

The dubious dream lives on. Two years ago, Texas Governor Rick Perry bruited the idea of a second Texas secession — the state left during the Civil War — to excitable Tea Party audiences. Now bruiting the idea of running for president, Perry has muted his anti-Constitutional proclamations.

“He ain’t sayin where he’s from, probably a damn yankee.”

Regardless of his state of residence, he's certainly a supporter of all-powerful “national” government
(as opposed to our constitutional form).

Well fellas and gals,

I guess what we got here...

...is a Texas stand-off!

Not Really...

What we have is a zealous group of Palin and Ron Paul supporters desperately trying to kneecap Perry before he gets in. He is considered a threat. Most conservatives have no problem with what Perry had to say about Texas seceding.

Poster JohBrownUSA is just provoking reactions. See his subsequent posts and screen name. No telling where he’s from, but anyone from the northeast corridor gets mighty upset when somebody from the provinces expresses an objection to being exploited by the use of the political and money control that reside up there. Even somebody with murky conservative credentials.

I heard Perry make his off hand comment, it was his way of telling obama to straighten up! Just like you tell your child to behave or suffer the consequences.

My 7th grade Texas history class was a long time ago but I seem to remember that when Texas joined the union it retained the right to leave. We were an independent nation at the time. My ancestors were here then and I enjoyed hearing Perry make his comment. It made me smile.

And your mockery of tying ‘secession’ to the Declaration of Independence is weak.

"Any people, anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government and form a new one that suits them better. This is a sacred, a most valuable right...Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can may revolutionize, and make their own, so much of the territory as they inhabit." -- Congressman Abraham Lincoln, January, 1848, speech on floor of U.S. House of Representatives

And what is “America”? Just some contiguous real estate? I thought soldiers and others swore to uphold and defend the Constitution and the principles it embodies. Now go read the Declaration.

As for me, I don’t care to be part of a Stalinist, Gramscian, or any other form of unconstitutional “America”. I don’t believe that your buddies died so that their descendents could live under Sharia in a welfare state, for example. Of course, I could be wrong.

Lou Dobbs: Imagine why there isn’t just complete outrage throughout the state of Texas over this.

Well, I’m going to start vetting Perry because it seems his supporters are way to eager to gloss over things he’s said and done.

Right now, I’m scratching my head over this video.

Come on. The poster almost certainly had no idea what Perry actually said. It isn’t as if the MSM provides people with accurate information, and the poster is responding to an NYT story that he assumes is accurate.

As for me, I’m not much of a Perry supporter, but his comments on secession are a positive from my perspective.

Post 36 : Or are you just going to be stubborn (and dishonest) and not admit you misspoke.

I have my answer.

Your statement is confusing...

...and, you seem stuck on succession.

Succession from England?

Or the nonsense of Texans proclaiming their ‘right’ to secede from the greatest nation the world has ever known?

And that greatest nation is called America, which isn’t some contiguous real estate, but united states forming a federal constitutional republic.

And your insertion of living under sharia law only distracted from the main premise of this thread which is Perry bragging about Texas’ right to secede from America.

Now go read your own words and see if you can follow them.

To suggest a secession from America is an affront to the thousands of American military service members who died to protect and defend America.

And trying to use the blood of those who Honorably served to advance such a skewed viewpoint that the country as a whole is MORE important than the individual States who created it is an affront to the colonists, the Militiamen, the Founders and all those who bled, sweated, toiled and died to CREATE America!

-----

Secession is an acknowledged and Constitutional RIGHT, you dipstick.....

And since the seceding states, by establishing a new constitution and form of federal government among themselves, without the consent of the rest, have shown that they consider the right to do so whenever the occasion may, in their opinion require it, as unquestionable, we may infer that that right has not been diminished by any new compact which they may since have entered into, since none could be more solemn or explicit than the first, nor more binding upon the contracting parties. Their obligation, therefore, to preserve the present constitution, is not greater than their former obligations were, to adhere to the articles of confederation; each state possessing the same right of withdrawing itself from the confederacy without the consent of the rest, as any number of them do, or ever did, possess.
Of the Several Forms of Government, St. George Tucker, View of the Constitution of the United States, Section XIII

-----

Why are you tying yourself up in knots over a statement that is perfectly correct?

I served on the BB-62, by the way.

Shame to see the battleships leave the fleet.

Haze gray and underway! :)

Well, if Sarah is supporting Perry, like all you are claiming, then what is the worry?

OH, WAIT.

I forgot.

I’m not supposed to vet Perry, huh? And since these last couple of hours I have learned some things I don’t like about Texas and Perry, that should be disregarded, huh?

I’m a Tea Party Sarah supporter.

I’ve used kids gloves with you all.

Wait until the liberal main scream media attacks Perry if he’s got the nomination (assuming Sarah decided to not get in the race).

All you Texans just might flee America for gentler climes.

umm, personal attack aside,

when was the last time you looked at the AMERICAN flag?

Ahem!

You go right on ahead and secede from America then.

I’ll make sure you don’t get let back in.

It was a “gotcha” question and he answered it politically in a way that assured people he was for continued participation of Texas in the USA, but that pandered to the ‘independent’ sentiment.

To turn around and say he is drumming up secessionist sentiment, or outright advocating it, is to ignore the context AND the answer - but go ahead and just go with the headline - if you think that suits your purpose.

suspect it is an attempt by the left-wing to "paint" a potential candidate as a radical.

The idea of a "perpetual Union" is radical and an antithesis to the founding principles of our republic. Secession is not radical at all.

Even more radical is FedGov™ invading a state(s) that has VOTED and decided to leave this bastard union.

The statement is only confusing if you have reading comprehension problems. I previously gave you the benefit of the doubt in another post. Now you have nearly confirmed that you are a troll.

Because you seem to attempt to argue from nostalgia (”the greatest nation the world has ever known”), I would point out that our federal constitutional republic is as dead as the Roman Republic in the days of Augustus Caesar.
