Mark Steyn : 'Life on this planet' about to change
Orange County Register ^ | July 30, 2011 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 07/30/2011 9:35:14 AM PDT by Clairity

That thoughtful observer of the passing parade, Nancy Pelosi, weighed in on the "debt ceiling" negotiations the other day: "What we're trying to do is save the world from the Republican budget. We're trying to save life on this planet as we know it today."

It's always good to have things explained in terms we simpletons can understand. After a while, all the stuff about debt-to-GDP ratio and CBO alternative baseline scenarios starts to give you a bit of a headache, so we should be grateful to the House Minority Leader for putting it in layman's terms: What's at stake is "life on this planet as we know it today." So, if right now you're living anywhere in the general vicinity of this planet, it's good to know Nancy's in there pitching for you.

What about life on this planet tomorrow? How's that look if Nancy gets her way? The Democrat model of governance is to spend four trillion dollars while only collecting two trillion, borrowing the rest from tomorrow. Instead of "printing money," we're printing credit cards and preapproving our unborn grandchildren.

Only the government would count money not spent as money saved.

And taxes “not collected” [Bush tax cuts] as money “spent.”

Steyn looks at the future, and it doesn’t look pretty for us.

When you get back here don’t miss this part:

“To facilitate this proposition, Washington created its own form of fantasy accounting: “baseline budgeting,” under which growth-in-government is factored in to federal bookkeeping as a permanent feature of life. As Arthur Herman of the American Enterprise Institute pointed out this week, under present rules, if the government were to announce a spending freeze – that’s to say, no increases, no cuts, everything just stays exactly the same – the Congressional Budget Office would score it as a $9 trillion savings. In real-world terms, there are no “savings,” and there’s certainly no $9 trillion. In fact, there isn’t one thin dime. But nevertheless that’s how it would be measured at the CBO.”

Baseline budgeting allows every program to automatically increase 3%, 5%, 10% EVERY YEAR regardless of population increase, inflation, “clients” served (or lack thereof of these items), etc. Just bigger - every year. Sigh.

Under Dubya we had everything - Executive, Senate, Representatives and even a favorable SCOTUS and they failed to knock out baseline budgeting, earmarks, useless programs including Ed, DOE, NPR, NEA, etc. Double sigh.

I think you nailed it - this is all about turning the US into a Socialist/(possibly)Communist society - and the Republican party has participated in the march

This is such an easily understood explanation of the current situation. Steyn is a master wordsmith.

This should be an RNC add running around the country on Monday and Tuesday.

You are right. All of this talk of cutting trillions is a massive FRAUD. What is being discussed are not real cuts to current spending levels - but rather make-believe cuts to a make-believe ten year spending projection. (So most of the cuts come in projected spending in out years, spending over which this congress has no control, no power, no authority.)

Both parties are in on this fraud. We need to rise up and scream STOP. We need to insist on real cuts to current spending.

And this is why the GOP should have stood it’s ground. Because when the ratings agencies slash our debt status anyway, the markets will do whatever is they were doing to do anyway.

We fell for the Dems Wizard of Oz routine. They are scared to death and they are bluffing us into a last-minute deal to save President Fool Sucka’s political arse for ‘12. They don’t care about anything else. They’ll pass this bill and it will have no effect on reversing the path where we are already going.

The GOP did stand its ground. They supported raising the debt ceiling by more than two TRILLION dollars from day one, and almost the entire Republican caucus voted to do so.

"The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale."

-- Thomas Jefferson

"The people are responsible for the character of their government. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them..."

-- James Garfield

They should have stood their ground on that too. Boner gave that away right out of the gate. Well sort of, McConnell cut him off at the knees with his plan first. Most of this is on McConnells lap.

Huh? That doesn't compute, in light of the factual statement to which you were responding.

"The GOP did stand its ground. They supported raising the debt ceiling by more than two TRILLION dollars from day one, and almost the entire Republican caucus voted to do so."

Wrong. Boner didn’t have the votes for passing till he threw in the BBA, so it’s not quite accurate to say nearly everyone was on board with a debt ceiling raise up front. I have no idea how many were on board up front, neither do you. A good percentage yes, but far less than ‘almost everyone’ I’d imagine. Boner did a great deal of wrangling to get the votes.

Wrong. “Cut, Cap, and Balance” would have raised the debt ceiling by $2.4 TRILLION. So, you’re leaving out critically important parts of the accurate history of what just went down.
