Sentencing phase begins after Warren Jeffs found guilty

SAN ANGELO — With two guilty verdicts in hand, the state of Texas is pressing ahead into the penalty phase of the Warren Jeffs trial in San Angelo.

After a 10-woman, two-man Tom Green County jury found the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints guilty as charged of one count of sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child, the penalty phase of the trial proceeded almost immediately late Thursday afternoon.

In the penalty phase, prosecution and defense can present arguments, witnesses and evidence for the jury to consider as it deliberates on penalties.

Attorney General Greg Abbott, who was present the first two days of the trial and returned Thursday to hear the verdict, said: "It's a unique case with regard to the crimes involved at the YFZ Ranch. The veil has been pulled back on the sexual assault of so many kids."

Jeffs' support in his own sect has become shaky. Willie Jessop, a former follower of Jeffs who remains a member of the FLDS, spurned the convicted leader.

"Warren Jeffs betrayed his people and the values of his people," Jessop said at the end of Thursday's proceedings. Everyone in the FLDS, he said, "has to take some responsibility."

My FIL (rest his soul) grew up on a farm in Indiana. I have heard the stories of when he “neutered” hogs. (not sure of the correct animal-husbandry term). I remember asking, “Did many bleed to death?” He would laugh... then say “nope, that never happened”. My MIL visited the farm with him when they were young. Growing up in the suburbs did not get her ready for the day when Pop-Pop helped his Dad with the hogs. She got so upset with the hogs screaming that she drove into town for the entire day. Even when it was explained to her that a hog will raise heck just being held.. didn’t matter. It was town for the day!

He was only charged with two counts. Found guilty on both.

Can’t find a news source online for this, but apparently Jeffs is still raising heck in court. Soon as someone puts the story online, I’ll post. But in brief, he’s still trying to command the judge to do things his way—he wants to be avoid being in court for the sentencing process, but if he doesn’t come to court, the judge says she has to appoint an attorney for him. He doesn’t want that. She evidently politely told him that he is not in control here, and he can do one or the other.

They just had the Texas AG on TRUTV, and from what he said, maybe this time something will actually be done. At least in Texas. I have no hope for Utah.

Sounds like more indictments will be coming.

“We are alarmed that such depravity could have been perpetrated by anyone,” says a written statement from the Principle Rights Coalition, a group representing five polygamist groups in Arizona and Utah, as well as “numerous other independent Fundamentalist Mormons.”

“It is especially devastating to discover that sexual assault of young children may have occurred behind the false pretense of a religious ideology,” the statement says. “If any members of our communities are in fact guilty, we fully support their being brought to justice.”

Looks like lots of rushing to cover backsides here. Perhaps literally.

He actually said that Texas “would look into” prosecuting some of the women. People are calling in to TRU TV demanding pitchforks, tar and feathers for these women. Not much sympathy from these callers! (Many of them mothers themselves.)

Yep. Hogs can be ear splitting. I much preferred doing this work on young bullocks. Back in the day, I wrestled and held them down while my brother did the cutting.

When the cutting was done, we retired to the table for a tasty breakfast of scrambled eggs, hotcakes and Rocky Mountain oysters. The womenfolk in the household were not allowed to partake of these oysters because it was thought to enhance the male hormones.

The hog oysters just got thrown away. Wish I'd asked my Dad why.

The tool in my post generally just smashes the seminal vessels without the blood. Once in awhile, it will break the skin and you get minor bleeding. Even more rarely, the vessels will survive or recover from the initial crimping and the process has to be redone. Not a pleasant process, because the animal knows exactly what is going to happen. My dad preferred to do the cutting on younger calves (more sure, they heal faster) and use the tool on older calves since you were far less likely to need an encore as the seminal vessels are generally fully or nearly fully developed and will not recover even from a bad crimp. It goes without saying that you don't get Rocky Mountain Oysters by using the tool.

First of all, these women in the compound need to be told that Jeffs was convicted. They probably don't even know at this point. They need to know and ponder the implications of their involvement.

Flora said she is going to try to do just that, when she was on the phone with HLN yesterday evening. Let’s hope she can get it done—it won’t be easy.

Jeffs delivers proclamation during sentencing phase

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Warren Jeffs delivered another proclamation he said is from God this morning during the sentencing phase of his trial.

On Thursday, Jeffs, the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was found guilty of one count of sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child. The penalty phase of the trial proceeded almost immediately late Thursday afternoon.

This morning, he read a statement for the court before the jury came in.

Reading from a statement that Jeffs said God sent him, Jeffs said "This judging of the servant of my sending is an unjust attack."

The nation will "go down with the fall of Babylon," the statement continued, "and there will be a "whirlwind of judgment over North and South America."

Jeffs requested to not be present through the sentencing phase, also adding he did not want standby counsel to represent him either.

However, 51st District Judge Barbara Walther, said he could not have both.

"I know that this is difficult for you to understand," she told Jeffs, "but you don't have control over these proceedings."

It's gratifying to see Warren Jeffs reduced to this.

That was one powerful moment, I think. Those who escaped his cult must be delighted to see someone, especially a woman, say this!

Why do I think that the womenfolk not being able to participate in the “oyster” part of the breakfast wasn’t met with debate?!!! “Oh.. you boys worked so hard... you can have ALL the Rocky Mountain Oysters that you want!” ((giggle, giggle))

When a case goes to court, I’ll be on the side of the anti-polygamists. Every time. Regardless of who’s practicing it.
