So where WERE the police? Shopkeepers mystified at tactics that left them defenceless

Officers accused of inaction as looting mobs go wild Cameron leads calls for more robust policing Top Yard commander: 'We need to do more for London' All able-bodied officers and special constables called in Plastic bullets would be used for first time 'if deemed necessary'

Shopkeepers joined an increasing chorus of voices today demanding to know what the police were doing as swathes of London descended into chaos last night.

Business owners accused police of adopting a softly-softly approach which left their shops and businesses vulnerable to attack by baying mobs.

While police were criticised in some quarters for being far too slow to get to riot scenes, officers were accused by shopkeepers in Hackney of standing just yards away from looters as windows were smashed and armfuls of goods were scooped up.

Cypran Asota, who has run the Boots opticians for 25 years, told the London Evening Standard how he watched as the shop was destroyed.

I hope that Americans start to realize how important it is to uphold our 2nd Amendment rights and how dangerous it is to even pay attention to the UN request that America disarm itself.

Just like the riots after the Rodney King trial. The police did nothing. It was up to shop owners to stop the looters.

The cops are chicken-shits looking forward to cushy pensions and not wanting to risk a hangnail. Their leaders are elitists who are so far removed from the life of the people that this whole thing might as well be taking place on an ant farm. And the People — despite the fear and anger they feel at the moment — will go back to doing exactly as they are told.

Because that’s the REAL goal of the police and government in Britain — to perpetuate the system of Lefist Aristocracy that exists — and to hold the people down.

SOMEBODY GOOD WITH PHOTOSHOP PLEASE!

There is a famous poster that was created during World War II, asking Americans to send guns to England so they could defend themselves.

It would be hilarious to see it marked up to reflect these days and times (and apparently, it would still be relevant)!

Er...not all guns aren’t illegal to own. My grandfather has two.

That is meant to say: not all guns are illegal.

“It is not their function to protect citizens of the state, though the police may choose to do this.”

So the “To Protect and Serve” emblem is a lie?

“No, we are not. We use LRAD and tear gas......”

If the police get there first.

PS - the poster can be found about half way through this link. A nice big headline that says, “Send a Gun To Defend A British Home.” Tragically funny in light of current events.

That may be their motto, but that is not their function.

They are an offensive force, not defensive. That is why they won’t do anything to stop a crime. They only act when a crime has been committed.

When I say that, I am not saying there aren’t good cops out there who would stop a crime, if they were aware of one.

“Take notice America, as we are on the verge of the same destruction!”

Uhhh, no. The lessons of the LA riots were well learned. In general, the U.S. police will respond to anything like London with overwhelming force. To protect the rioters from the populace as much as anything.

More from the LA riots:

Humvees show up at 1:50, don’t miss the LA cop at the end, “there’s just too many of them...”

Sounds juuuust like London, ‘cept much sunnier:

A goodly hunk of rebar with duct tape wrapped for a handle, or any old crowbar, would work well for the shopkeepers. (They’ve no Louisville Sluggers, most likely, and those cricket thingies probably wouldn’t have the desired effect.)

‘Course, then the shopkeepers would be arrested, wouldn’t they.
