Politics, money, unions and the Wisconsin recall elections

Democrats and public unions may not be dancing in the streets after picking up two of six Republican Senate seats in last week's recall election, but they may be smirking a little -- or not.

The recall elections for nine state senators -- six Republicans and three Democrats in what some observers said was more retaliatory than reasoned -- is unprecedented. A Democrat was the first to face -- and win -- a recall election last month and two more face recall votes Tuesday.

To put it in perspective: There have only been 13 successful recalls in the state since 1913.

Unions, their workers and their money backed Democratic candidates and some pundits wondered if the 4-2 score Tuesday may spell trouble for the efforts.

"The results are deflating for unions because they expended much financial and membership effort and did not achieve their goal," said Steven Schier, political commentator and professor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. "That, combined with their loss in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election [earlier this year] is a double setback."

The amazing part of all this is that the dems haven’t tried to go to court to demand recounts in only the races where republicans won.

Regardless of what happens Tuesday, the dims still want to recall the Guv next year. I say they won’t have the money to do it. Because gov’t will no longer be witholding union dues from paychecks, I’m betting a whole bunch of members won’t be writting checks every month to the unions. WTH, they’ll still have their jobs and can pocket a couple grand a year. Why pay dues?

From what I have been reading there is only a fair chance of winning one of the recall elections this Teusday. One of them (don’t know the names) is pretty much a lock for the Dem.

I'd like them both to go, will settle for one and even if both win, the demonRATS took a $35 MILLION hit, and even for the unions, that's money they don't have for next year.

Laughing at the crying on pmsnbc the night after the elections was worth watching that piece of shit network for a short time this past week.

Millions of dollars were poured into the state by the national unions. They don’t need local state union money. You’d better believe the two Dems up for recall this week have received tons of money from Big Union.

In fact, last week's recalls could be a cautionary tale for other governors and lawmakers deciding whether to curtail collective bargaining rights or otherwise upsetting public unions. Democrats, even in losing, had a good showing in Republican districts.

So, the "cautionary tale" is that you shouldn't do the right thing, as this will upset the opposition so much that the will throw a hissy fit, spend huge amounts of money - and fail in their efforts to undo the right thing?

Uhh Ok - consider us cautioned.

The media always forget to mention that in those six GOP districts up for recall last week that Obama won all six in 2008.

The media keeps wanting to imply that somehow these districts are Barry Goldwater hamlets. No. The unions couldn’t get enough recall signatures in the really heavy GOP districts.

The other thing the media fails to point out is that all these recall petitions were garnered back in March when the unions tried the narrative that they were being enslaved by the Governor. Six months later most people realize he was simply asking them to take a pay cut to balance the budget. I’m not sure they get as many people recalled if they went out for signatures today.

FYI...what hasn’t been dicussed much is that the Dem vote may be really LOW on Tuesday. Since these elections mean NOTHING in terms of controlling the Senate, and because they failed last week, Dems may not turn out to vote. OTOH..GOP is energized.....one seat looks like a good pick-up..two may well happen...and then let the Dem spin begin..
