Tombstone mystery in drug case
San Bernardino County Sheriff's investigators are left with a mystery following the discovery of 24 cemetery headstones in the backyard of a Loma Linda home they were searching for evidence in a drug case Tuesday.
One of the headstones was tentatively traced to Montecito Memorial Park in Colton, sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said. But a spokeswoman for the cemetery's parent company said workmen found a headstone in place on the grave in question.
Lisa Marshall, spokeswoman for Service Corporation International, said no markers were reported missing and that the company is cooperating with investigators.
Deputies found the gravestones while serving a search warrant at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday during a narcotics investigation in the 10900-block of Cabrillo Loop in Loma Linda.
"While in the backyard, ... deputies noticed several tombstones lying around," investigators said in a written statement.
The grave markers have an estimated value of $48,000.
Arrested at 4:22 p.m. at that address and booked for investigation of methamphetamine sales and possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics was 50-year-old John Orville Bleuer, jail records show. His bail is $50,000.
Also arrested were Steve Hansen, Lisa Jackson and Louis Anchelowitz, all of that address, according to the statement. However, there are no on-line jail records regarding them.
Bachman said authorities do not know why the headstones were in the back yard of the home or where they came from. She said authorities are hoping the public will be able to help find the rightful owners.

Doesn’t surprise me one bit. Thieves will steal anything not nailed down, and these days even nails won’t stop them. The markers are probably re-cut to remove the old inscriptions and sold on the black market.
Ahh, they are just anticipating the death panels for us oldsters.

The Montecito Memorial Park is located in Loma Linda, CA.
The Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery is located in Colton, CA.
This Cemetery, founded in 1831, is the burial place of Morgan Earp, brother of Wyatt, and at least two other members of the Earp family.
Stealing tombstones is a grave offense.

My cousin found a grave marker in the garden of the house she eventually bought. The real estate agent freaked out and started making phone calls about someone being buried on the property.
Turned out the former owner’s son worked for a monument company, which made a “typo” (engravo?) on a stone. The stone was redone and the man asked for the erroneous one, putting it in the garden.
My cousin has had what would have been the underside of the stone finished and engraved with the street number of the house.
One particularly cruel target of theft are the bronze plaques marking the graves of military personnel. Sold for scrap.
