Has Progressivism Ruined Environmental Science? (Where's the diversity, tolerance, etc.?)
American Thinker ^ | August 22, 2011 | Anthony J. Sadar

In my thirty years of work in the science arena, as a government scientist, an industry consultant, and an academician, I have witnessed an increasingly adverse influence of progressivism on the practice of science. This influence has been especially visible in my specialty, environmental science (with a focus on air-pollution meteorology).

From the start of the modern environmental movement with the publication of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson in 1962 followed by The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich in 1968, the science of the environment became overly contentious. Certainly, diversity of opinion and positions in the scientific community is desirable and largely advantageous to the advancement of the discipline. But, what quickly developed was a progressive environmentalism that elevated nature back to the Gaian status of the ancients and established one viewpoint as dogma. Soon, conformance to this one holy vision (as opposed to the usual ad nauseam progressive mantra to "celebrate diversity") became the mandate. Anyone opposed the lofty goal imposed by progressive theology of protecting the Earth, at nearly any cost, was increasingly targeted in very unscientific ways with ad hominem attacks, public ridicule, eventual limitation of government funding, and even eco-terrorism.

In addition, regardless of the extreme actions taken by progressives to defend their sacred environmental tenets, media outlets and the scientific community were rather tolerant.

Climate-science practice is surely a good example of the current progressive-influenced "consensus" toward challengers of the humans-are-heating-the-planet storyline. And, the "Climategate" tempest is a specific instance.

Normally, much ado would have been made by the mainstream media and mainstream science with the release of the Climategate e-mails. Instead, both seemed to work overtime to minimize the damage from those exposed files. The mainstream media often seemed to downplay the importance of the e-mail content and referred to the files as "stolen,"...

libtards don’t live by rule or laws, or even by their own demands.

*****************************************************

the U.S. should go back to the gold standard. It would be a management nightmare, worse than the Federal Reserve.

Ecologists would have said putting the aquatic vegetation back in the estuary I grew up on would restore the entire ecosystem, and return it to a thriving and commercially expolitable resource.

Environmentalists arbitrarily decide that any alteration to the altered ecosystem would be anathema, and thus it remains pretty much dead.

Sanity fled when the science became an -ism.

Millions of board feet of lumber rot or burn each year as a result, farmland lies fallow, and invasive species become established because no one is allowed to utilize the resources present, banned in the name of 'environmental preservation', not as a dynamic ecosystem, but as a static snapshot.

Environmentalism and collectivism are the same thing.
Feminism and collectivism are the same thing.
“Anti-racism” and collectivism are the same thing.
“Social justice” and collectivism are the same thing.
“Gay rights” and collectivism are the same thing.
“Immigrants rights” and collectivism are the same thing.

Etc.

It is all the same thing.

It is all lies designed to destroy Western Civilization and Christianity and to make all men slaves to tyranny.

Not here it hasn't.

Our accomplishments on our property have both the California Native Plant Society and the California Native Grasslands Association begging me to write papers explaining how we did in only ten years what they have not accomplished on even a far smaller scale with huge amounts of public money.

The study of science has been corrupted and politicized in modern times and particularly since the time that Darwin's worldview became the defining philosophy of many of those presume-ably studying "science."

One should not be surprised that this happens in an environment where the study of science becomes divorced from the search for truth, and instead becomes married merely to a political philosophy and a social agenda.

FReegards!

Climate science is political, not scientific.

No, something more important - the concepts of causality, truth and falsity, AKA the very foundation of logical reasoning.

Much of what is happening today is as a result of this. To argue that someone has reached a wrong conclusion is to attack them personally because in the end, what they believe is completely tied up with what they feel.

How right you are. Scratch a member of any of these interest groups and you’ll find the same thing - a red.

You are correct! All are efforts to fragment society into classes and then to foment conflict between them. Marxism posits class conflict and the prospect of the masses revolting against the establishment (businesses). Since that is not occurring on its own they have to assist it by stirring up conflict.

Environmentalism is an attack on private property rights, another key element of our way of life, and the suppression of industrial development.

Once the Science Community became Federal Grant Money Whores, diversity, tolerance, and scientific integraty went out the window. Where ever politics is introduced, all decisions and judgments become political.

Progressive influence is also obvious in my specialty, psychiatry.

The new DSM (diagnostic manual) is planning to remove PEDOPHILIA from the list of mental illnesses.

All science has been ruined. Projects are begun with predetermined outcomes: projects are scewed in the direction of political bias, opposing theories are not allowed.

The gold standard could be rather easily implemented by having Congress pass a law that does two things.

1) Establish the use of GEOs (Gold Equivilent Oz) which is essentially taking the property owned by the federal government and selling it at current market prices and then using that number to convert to gold oz. An oz of gold held in the treasury would be a 1:1 ratio.

Timber held in the forests would need to be converted. Likewise, copper, oil, buildings, land, and other precious metals would need to be converted to GEOs as well

The asset list would be established by census every 10 years. Valuation in dollars would be established every year based upon the trailing 12 month average for like assets.

2) Specific that each year, Congress shall vote and NOT delegate to establish a ratio of dollars to be in circulation against the number of GEOs
