We are nearing a new moon syzygy

1) Thich has absolutely zip, zero, NOTHING to do with earthquakes.

2) The moon today is a waning crescent and it's SEVEN DAYS to the new moon. By your standards, you can blame a quake ANY day of a 28 day lunar month on the moon because we're either "nearing" or "just after" a "new moon syzygy" or a "full moon syzygy."

first house I ever bought in Manitoba... after 2 days in house, city sewage backed up into my basement. They had crushed the sewer pipe when they were working on something else. Needless to say it was a disaster. Now my rule of thumb is.. if there is no check valve, install one.

We felt it in Pittsburgh. My office is on the fifth floor. It was pretty cool.

NC is beautiful, but I can’t handle the humidity. I do love the thunderstorms, though!

I can't stand the east coast humidity either but I sure do miss hearing those thunderstorms.

Me too! I drove back to home this summer and I saw lightning bugs in Wisconsin for the first time in years.

I was a bit closer - maybe 40 miles. Only reason I got up was because my little sister wouldn't stop shrieking. I figured it must be pretty good, if it had her that excited.

Yeah, I seem to remember at the time they were talking in the 7s. I don’t think that from my own sense of being caught in today’s quake I’d have given it as high as a 5.8, except on my nerves scale. It took my “brain” 28 of the 30 seconds to even realize it WAS a quake.

Funny you bring this up. The first house I owned by myself when I was around 24 was on a road where they decided to fix water mains right in front of my house. I was pretty broke, having scraped together everything to get into the house.

Well, they repaired it in the winter and ended up freezing and breaking the pipe that led into my house! Since it was on my property, they told me they would not fix it! I had no water for over a month while I fought city hall. I did not have five hundred dollars to fix it! Finally, I met a lawyer at a party and he liked me. He promptly beat city hall on my behalf the following day.

"NIMBY, huh?"

You betcha!

The town had a choice of three areas. Why install a sewer plant right IN the center of town, in an area that is closest to the creek? It could be placed in the outskirts where no homes would be affected and it would be a safe distance from the creek.

Thanks for the advice.

My concern is if the main sewage holding tank cracks or shifts, the damage won't be visible when it happens because it would happen underground. That plant will be 200 feet from my house. The water that floods the cellar yearly would be contaminated with sewage which may not be detected because it would be diluted. If a pipe bursts, then that's a different story. I would have immediate proof.

I’m sorry this happened to you. I can guess I know exactly what you went through.

Back in January 1996, the temperature rose above 50 for most of the day then dropped to below freezing. The snow melted suddenly causing severe flooding. My house was flooded from the front that day because of the creek. Underground water was rushing in from the back into my cellar. The two sump pumps could not keep up. I had to turn off the furnace and water pump just before the water reached them. For one week I was without heat or water. There wasn’t any snow left to melt for a cup of coffee! Looking back,I don’t know how I managed.

Meanwhile, the surface flood had eroded my driveway by the road. The gaping hole was about a foot deep and three feet wide spanning the width of the driveway. Fema came when the temps were below freezing and said there’s nothing wrong with my driveway since they could drive over it. The hole was filled with frozen flood water! They wouldn’t fix it but did send me a check for $250 to hire someone to clean my cellar. I didn’t cash it. I did have to replace the flooded furnace too.

Don’t you just love bureaucracy?

Okay that’s weird because here in northern IL I awoke this afternoon to some really strange thunder rumblings. Now, I looked out and there WAS rain but the thunder was just very abnormal sounding. Then this evening on my way to work, it was sunny and clear. I was sitting in my car eating my burger and all of a sudden I heard a rumble and a gust of wind shook the car and a large piece of paper in the parking lot started whirling around like crazy and then it stopped.

Ha you have a way with words and your post made me laugh because a couple of years ago about 1:30 in the am I happened to be sleeping over at my mom’s in her spare room on a metal futon when all of a sudden the darn thing starts shaking underneath me and at the same time it sounded like something was moving underneath the futon frantically. It lasted about 6 seconds and the only thing I could think was that there’s a wild animal under the bed and probably a racoon or something and here I am trapped in this small room! It was a quake, turned on the radio cuz I had trouble getting right back to sleep and heard.

Agree they should use common sense when placing these plants. One thing though, the plants take in dirty water and discharge cleaner water. To a river, stream or creek. Thats why they are usually near rivers, streams or creeks. People don’t want to pay for miles of piping on the outgoing end to place them a “safe distance from the creek”.
