It seems their pants—which are completely new and supposed to be more durable than previous models—can't survive the rigors of the desert. They're ripping apart seemingly at random.
The new pants seemed perfectly fine. They use tightly stitched flame-resistant Defender M fabrics and Christian at Kit Up! says their "crotch design" is fine! But they can't survive up to the daily life of Army soldiers, and they get ripped right, left and center. The problem is so bad that the Army had to get back to select a new fabric, 40% stronger than the current material.

The uniforms the Soldiers were issued were some lowest bidder crap. Much worse quality than the ACUs, which aren't exactly famed for being resilient either.
This all gets back to the Global War on Fashion. The Army is completely in the grip of too many generals sitting on too many panels, all fighting to make their next star and get set up for when they retire. The ACU was a dismal failure, and their efforts to move on past it are schizophrenic and random.
As to the pants falling apart, you get what you pay for. It's unfortunate that this endless uniform infighting results in less money for what needs to be purchased, so they skimp on the quality. But much, much better stuff is available.
Shouldn’t this be in “Breaking” News?
I’ll bet you $5.00 when the suits come looking to cut money (because of the swell Boehner/Obama Debt Ceiling deal), this is where they’ll squeeze more savings, while continuing to buy $600 toilets and coffee pots that will brew a cup of joe at 10G on the bombers.

You are right. We ate them during Katrina and I was noticing the caloric count - wow - especially the deserts - loads of sugar for energy! Anyway, not bad tasting but if you are not going to work off the calories I can see how you could gain on 3 squares of MREs a day.
Anyway, China is the answer and I lock it in.
Whats coming apart? The stitching or the material?
Find that out and solve the problem.
If history is any guide the fabric failure is due to fraud in filling the clothing contracts. Many years ago my Uncle Reported that when he was in the Army in WWI their shoes disintegrated at the first rain in France. Government contractor fraud is an old story reaching back to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War etc. In a Democracy it is cash flow that counts; honesty and concern for the country are meaningless concepts.
The more things change... the term “shoddy” originally referred to a type of cloth made from reprocessed wool. It held up fine when dry, but easily tore when wet. During the War Between The States uniforms made from it would fall off the soldier’s bodies after a march in the rain. The term lingers to this day.

When the Army issued BDUs there were thin summer weight uniforms and thicker winter weight uniforms. I was stationed at Ft. Bliss and even though it was blazing hot I always wore winter weights because they held up much better.
Nowadays, there is only on summer weight issued.
