Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

Funny how both the Romans and the Chinese were able to build walls and defend their boarders, yet it is not technically feasible for us.

Snipers, okay. But our children live here. We, the people of Texas, decide how we live, not terrorists, not drug runners and not the Feds.

Perry is a traitor to the nation, not fit for dog catcher, much less POTUS.

We need a wall on the southern border and cameras to keep an eye out for those who dare to climb the wall. Electrified and barbed wire across the top will help to keep the illegals out. The troops will be shot at and have to be replaced and they have to be paid, too. I would rather save their lives so their families will have Moms and Dads. So, it makes more sense to build a wall.

Huge problem for Perry. Huge problem for me.

The East Germans nor the West Germans were Texans. We will not have our land and homes taken for “non-contiguous” - useless - fences. “Come and take it!” is more than our history.

Just a reminder ~ the Maginot line worked. That forced the Germans to use a different ploy and enter France through Belgium through the previously believed to be inpenetrable Ardennes.

The French seeing no threat from Belgium didn't build the Maginot line through that sector.

Their thinking, like Perry's, imagined that the opponent is stupid and won't just move down the road to cross where you forgot to build a fence.

In any case, the wall was not contiguous and consisted of a number of ouverages (essentially independent fortresses housing thousands of troops) that had overlapping fields of fire that could destroy just about any invader attempting to come their way.

The "line" was superfluous and only a few of the ouverages had to be taken by combat, and then only much later in the war!

Essentially the Maginot Line worked well. France escaped substantial property damage in the Isle de France as a result ~ which was the purpose. Now the coast? That is another question entirely!

Keep the discussion based on laws and economics. Punish the employers. De-incentivize illegals from coming in the first place. Incentivize them to go home on their own. It's not as quick as rounding them up and throwing them on southbound buses, but it has the advantage of being totally feasible and politically palatable.

The easiest way to solve the illegal immigrant problem is to charge higher income, FICA, and medicare taxes for non citizen workers. Once there is money to be made the government will be ruthless in enforcement. Have you ever seen the IRS decide not to go after money due from an employer?

You don't even really need to identify illegal immigrants - there could be discounted tax rates for people with legal visas, but they should still pay more in taxes.

For example, if the FICA rate for a non-citizen was 15% for the employee and 20% for the employer there would be little reason for employers to hire non-citizens unless there truly were no citizens willing to do the work. For non citizen workers there should be a tax on all income, and it should start at say 25%, and it could include a minimum amount every year.

Illegal immigrants pay thousands of dollars each to get smuggled across the border. It would be better for our government to sell non-citizen work permits for the same kind of price, or better yet make the employers pay the work permit fee. How many employers will want to write that check to the IRS?

Likewise, it is entirely reasonable to have different regulations for non-citizens. Making them pay for health insurance, or auto insurance is not an infringement on their rights, since they don't have a natural right to be in the country in the first place. Many countries have specific regulations for visitors - so should we.

Making the IRS the primary enforcer of immigration law is likely to be way more effective than any fence could ever be.

The main idea of this next election is going to be getting the US government back under adult supervision, and the alternative to Perry is unthinkable.

What a bigotted thing to say. I’m part American Indian, tan darker than most of my friends whose grandparents were from Mexico.

BTW, Brown eyed people have higher pain threshholds than pale-eyed people.

Then you don’t need a national border. We can redraw that on the North. I’m sure they’d be happy to have it. You and the Mexicans can share eh~!
