The Naked Truth and Public Nudity in San Francisco
The New American ^ | Saturday, 10 September | Selwyn Duke

There currently is a debate raging over public nudity in San Francisco.

It’s not what you think.

It’s already entirely legal to parade about in the buff on the city’s streets, and no one is discussing the resurrection of indecent-exposure laws. Rather, the question is whether sanitary behavior — namely, posterior protection for public seating — should be required of nudists by law.

Reports the Los Angeles Times:

Retired math teacher David Goldman and his husband, Michael Koehn, were sharing a pleasant alfresco moment at a public plaza in the heart of the Castro district this week, passing a slender joint between them (medicinal, of course), as Eric Anderson sunbathed one table over. Naked.

Resplendent in flip-flops, hoop earrings and a sheen of Coppertone, the out-of work retail manager, 44, had draped a lime-green sarong between flesh and public seating.

Naturists call such posterior protection “normal etiquette.” But San Franciscans soon may call it the law.

Given what is casually related in the above excerpt, it’s clear that, regrettably, public nudity is quite congruent with San Franciscan norms. Yet, while some may not know enough to cover up in Western Civilization, they certainly know enough to don a lexical cover-up. That is to say, notice how the Times refers to these nudists as “naturists.” But what is a naturist? Is this someone who believes in eating only organic foods or living deep in a forest sans the trappings of modernity? My point is that when one euphemizes, when he discards a word that describes well what he does in favor of a far less specific term (think “pro-choice” in place of “pro-abortion”), it often indicates that what he does isn’t something of which to be proud. It often means that he has to use slick marketing language to sell his....

Do any of these people who want to do away with EVERY law and regulated behavior ever wonder WHY these laws were instigated in the first place?

Disease, perhaps?

“It’s not what you think.”

It should be...

“It’s already entirely legal to parade about in the buff on the city’s streets, and no one is discussing the resurrection of indecent-exposure laws.”

They should be... This is so wrong at every level -

What an image! I don’t need to see pictures. The description is more than enough.

By the same token, with these people the 1st amendment might as well be renamed the Larry Flynt amendment, as that’s the only sort of expression that it seems to protect nowadays in the minds of secular statists.

“Traditional Morality” is laughed at and proclaimed dead. But say one thing politically-incorrect and watch for the tar and feathers.

You can't beat the weather in SF. That said, there are still some good people that live there. Probably not many, but they are there. The City is redeemable by God's standards. And it WILL take intervention by God to accomplish this.

But anymore, when I think of SF I think of the book, "Lord of the Flies".

This article talks about a man and “his husband”, giving another opportunity to normalize the homosexual marriage issue.

When will the liberals complain about the word “husband”? If you look up the definition of husband, or animal husbandry, you will find that a husband is a manager of a household or a steward. A husband is a dominant managerial person, in other words.

The liberals forced everyone NOT to say “MAN AND WIFE” at wedding ceremonies, because it was sexist and all that. Instead everyone says “HUSBAND AND WIFE”. But there is still sexism in that statement. The liberals just don’t know it.

How do you refer to homosexual couples. Is it husband and husband, or wife and wife, depending on the sex of the same-sex couple? Just wondering, because it seems that the term husband is used for both male partners in a homosexual marriage.

I've long been an advocate of a border fence to keep the illegals out but now I'm thinking we should build one around San Francisco, first. Apologies to any SF FRiends but really, it's past the point of return.

This is unfortunately a logical outcome of liberalism. The liberal ideas of tolerance and accomodation of bizarre lifestyles pushes the envelope. Then, the question is, where does anyone draw the line?

With a mindset of them saying, don’t impose your values and standards on them, etc. then a key question is — are we allowed to have any standards at all? Who decides what those standards are? And are even the lax remaining standards of San Francisco imposing values on those who want to go further down the road into public nudity and open public sexual expression????

The first thing that hits you when you get out of your car in that filthy city is the smell. Think of the smells from an old gym bag, the worst gas station restroom you’ve ever been in, the loading dock at the morgue, and a pot of boiling vinegar, all mixed together at once.

This is to funny for words..A bunch of fat queers parading down the street with no clothes on..Picture it!!

Calling all straights leave San Fran while you can,the earth quake will be there with in a year to wipe the slugs off the streets..it is a shame since that city is so beautiful to have to wear blinders so you dont have to look at fools parading their naked fat bodies down the street..

I guess you just ask them which one does the most pillow biting, and go from there. What would Dear Abby say?

That’s a shame. I was there as a kid and it was pretty dirty then but still pretty doable if you stayed out of the more questionable areas; especially at night. Now, I wouldn’t even attempt it.

Not to be too graphic, but in San Francisco, naked male butts just might be leaking something that is far more toxic than the usual effluence.

OMG! This reminds me of a horrible nightmare I had one time. I dreamed it was the middle of the afternoon and I was sitting at a table in an outdoor restaurant like the one in this article. I was happy and everything was good, then the waiters started drifting in setting the tables. I looked down at myself and I was completely naked. I started looking for a tablecloth or even a napkin to cover myself before anyone noticed. That is when I woke up in a cold sweat.

Why is it that the loons ruin some of the best real estate and get away with it?

Remember the Rice-a-Roni "The San Francisco Treat" commercials? The sanitary condition of the city from these freaks brings a new meaning to the phrase.

OMG - I know the guy cited in the article - I mean my kids had him for math. He was an incredibly good teacher - demanding, but he made math interesting. In high school, I dropped calculus after one week. After ten minutes at a back-to-school night, he inspired me to WANT to learn calculus.

I’m 30 min away from SF, but we rarely go there. The last time we were there, the Union Square area was filthy with trash all over the place (I don’t know if the homeless are drinking their yuppie coffee and discarding the cups or the tourists or the residents). Then driving towards PacBell Park, a homeless guy came up to my car and pounded on it.

I’m no prude, but it’s a public versus private issue. If people want to go nude, fine; but don’t force it on everyone else. Appropriate attire shows respect for other people. I wonder if it’s legal to attend court nude in SF. Somehow I don’t think so.

Yes, I hate euphemisms. Any time you find yourself using one, stop and question the truth of what you are saying and whether you’re stretching it. Just a word of caution for the truthful.

Say, wasn’t a man arrested in San Francisco a year or two ago for indecent exposure when he urinated behind a tree?

Practioners of public nudity in SFA need to rethink their self medicaition regimin, IMO ! Been there many times. Most times a light jacket was an essential fashion accessory ! Of course its possible someone’s been liberally distributing genes from the indigenous population of Tierra del Fuego..... >PS

My company had in the past, spent over 650k a year in having our shareholders convention in S.F. I dare say far more then that was spent by our shareholders while in S.F.
Additionally, we would spend over 20k a year with the Boudin Bakery, shipping out gift packages all over the world. (my great grand father was one of their first bakers) We haven’t had a convention in S.F. for three years, and we stopped patronizing all businesses in S.F.
I’m wondering how many other corporations have ceased in doing business with the city?

Was your company a giant or medium sized? I would imagine companies staying away from S. F. would be medium sized thus “below the radar.”
