Special election a measure of Obama's strength

Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf said such numbers portend much bigger problems for Obama as he prepares to seek re-election in 2012.

"If the Democrats lose this race, it's a big failure and a huge rebuke on Obama's policies. Voters don't believe him anymore," Sheinkopf said. "If they lose a blue collar Democratic district in Queens, what happens in blue collar, Democratic districts around the nation next year?"

Other Democrats — including the White House — pushed back on that assessment, suggesting a combination of factors have contributed to the tight contest.

I can’t wait to see the results either but I’m a little uncomfortable with the author trying to claim it’s a “referendum” on Obama. Should the Dem in the contest win would it be fair to say the country approves of Obama’s presidency? I think not.

That’s the template being set, IMO. I was going to post the same thing but saw your post, and I agree with it.

In the Dem Dreamworld, the Dem will barely win, and suddenly Obama is the Comeback Kid (!!!) because a poll showed the Dem was going to lose.

Politics aren’t about absolutes. Bob Turner is up 6 points in one of the most Democratic districts in one of the bluest of states. The people who run campaigns analyze every nuance of elections like this.

OK, so close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, but a tight race there says a lot about the repudiation of Obama and Dems in general around the country.

And Scott Brown wasn’t the conservative many thought him to be, he won a major upset in a very left leaning area. You’ve got to win the battles in order to win the war.

It's a strawman. AP would only post that headline in a couple of instances:

1. Weprin is leading (some polls show he is)

2. The race is so close that the RATfactory is printing enough votes to make up the difference.

3. Weprin is so far behind that even the AP can't spin it, which i doubt.

I, sadly, think this is another Scosafava moment. IMO

Anyone want to bet Obama is on the phone to the Black Panthers tonight to see if they can be at polling places??

I disagree with your assessment. The polling suggests that the Republican is going to win in a district that has been Democrat forever! Even if the RAT ekes out a victory, the RAT party is going to go into convulsions. They have reportedly spent $500k in the past couple of weeks to try and turn the election around and it would appear that the money didn’t do much good if any. That the RAT party is going to have to spend large sums of money in traditional Blue Collar RAT districts around the country will mean that they won’t have the money to spend on districts that they need to take from the Republicans. This is Schmuckie Shumer’s old district. A RAT should win in a walk, but they won’t. No matter how this plays out, it’s pointing to a huge problem.

I know this area Very conservative people. (small ‘c’) They say and believe all the right things but just can’t connect the dots. And there is that ‘genetic’ disposition to pull the Democrat lever.

In ‘10 it was 15th most Dem out of 29 seats, with Weiner taking 61% - nowhere near Rangel’s 81% or Velazquez’s unopposed.

The least Dem seat was NY-26 which flipped Dem in the special election.

Yes, there are many circumstances under which NY-26 can flip; very few that would flip NY-15 or NY-12.

Sounds like you’ve come up with a grand conspiracy here.

The dems are printing votes and have notified the AP and coordinated their efforts with the editor who writes the headlines for these articles?

Gimmee a break.
