Bachmann's Vaccine Panic
gastongazette.com ^ | 9/18/2011 | Steve Chapman

Cancer treatment has made great progress in recent decades, but the tragedy is that so much of our effort to combat this scourge is just that: treatment. Once a disease appears, there is only so much that can be done. It would be far cheaper, more effective and less traumatic to prevent it.

A vaccine for cancer would be a triumph for public health. Did I say “would be”? Actually, it is. Such a vaccine exists for one of the biggest killers of women. But Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is against it, and she’s not alone.

Two different vaccines block transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 70 percent of all cervical cancer in this country, as well as most anal cancers and some cancers of the throat, vagina and penis.

Each year, says the National Cancer Institute, more than 12,000 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer alone, and some 4,000 will die of it. That’s not counting the genital warts HPV can cause.

It’s a nasty but very common bug that the world would be better off without. Universal inoculation would be a huge step toward eradicating it and the suffering it causes.

But there is a big impediment to its use: HPV is sexually transmitted, which makes the vaccine controversial — especially because to achieve maximum effectiveness, it has to be administered before the recipient becomes sexually active. And in this country, 6 percent of youngsters have sex by the age of 13.

That was a week ago.

Now, y’all are just nursing a grudge.

Please find a more worthwhile subject for your anger. Bachmann is an opponent, not the enemy.

I don't attack people for their positions. You have on the other hand gone overboard with personally attacking me and others who disagree with your point of view.

But if I become convinced (and I'm getting close) that she's pandering to the anti-vaccinations-in-general moonbat fringe, she's permanently off my list.

I don't think it was her original intention to do that. She just messed up after the debate and now she is trying to cover her tracks as best she can. It may have turned into a loony show, but I don't think that was ever her intention.

I also think she was trying to do the bidding Mitt Romney wants her to do (remember their alliance they forged a few weeks ago, at least), and she was saying and doing things she would not have done had it not been for what she was trying to do for Mitt Romney.

If her intention WAS for a VP slot based on her assumption Mitt Romney would win the nomination and her commitment to him for a VP slot, I wonder if Mitt will still even take her now.

You, at least, need to get your facts straight or you will appear emotional and illogical. She did not say any of this during the debate. This came at a post-debate appearance on Fox.

I wonder how many people “in the real world” actually paid any attention to this appearance?

You’re as dishonest as dishonest gets. Rick Perry’s EO was overturned by the Texas legislature and NOT ONE child was forcibly vaccinated. Rick Perry didn’t force those girls to get the Gardasil vaccine, their parents did.

“Anecdotal at best, BS at worst.”

The site has newspaper articles and tv coverage videos backing up the stories. Deny the evidence at your own risk.

Considering your vile attacks on Bachmann - and I’m sorry they are vile, I wish they weren’t - you are not in a good position to now whine about my “personal attacks.” I never would have posted to you if you hadn’t suggested that Bachmann was somehow “guilty until proven innocent” and even gone after some poor lady out in the ether who may have spoken to her.

You’ve upset several other people on this thread with your posts - deal with it as I deal with my posts.

Here we go. Let’s start the conspiracy theories about vaccines. When the Gardasil vaccine is given the first time you wait in the doctor’s office for 15 minutes for any side effects such as dizziness. This procedure is repeated with each following vaccine. Why would parents continue the vaccine treatment for their daughter if their arm went numb after the first shot? Is it possible that their child became ill because of another cause or it is 100% from the vaccine? The case with the 21 year old brings questions of why were their not any side effects during 6 month period of shots? Again, did an autopsy show that Gardasil killed this woman or was it another cause? These scare tactics are irresponsible. Why isn’t the focus on the lives that will be saved rather then on some doubt sayers with no proof?

There is an $11,000 reward out there, from a couple of professors at Minnesota and Penn, for Bachmann to produce this case, or this woman to come forward with medical record documentation of the gardasil vaccine causing mental retardation. It was reported on Fox News and it's been out there several days, but so far no one has called in.

This sorry episode is just one more illustration of the foolishness of believing unsubstantiated anecdotes, especially related to the so-called evils of modern medicine.

Anybody with a crap attitude can say anything she wants at a rally or on a blog, but that doesn't make it worth the time of day.

You are right. A minute or two after I posted I realised I should have said "in front of the cameras" instead of "at the debate".

My blunder, but does not change the problem with Bachmann.

Well that may be.

You may or may not believe me saying this, but I thus far have a high opinion of Perry. In fact it raised significantly after hearing on Fox and Friends, about a Perry meeting with Donald Trump, and the two are on similar wavelengths on the subject of trade.

I could actually become a Perrybot, over that issue. But seriously, the whole personal attacks thing on Bachmann seems. Dare I say it. Catty.

Please stop. It’s so Alinsky.

It’s the politics of personal destruction. And our side is better than that.

Or at least, I’ve always believed. How about waiting for Bachmann to screw up again, so you can go after her on that. I say, with the intentional inference that I believe she probably will. :)

I’m not a Bachmann partisan, I’m just getting a bit against all the personal attacks the last few weeks.

This gardasil issue is really stale.

It’s gotten like two kids saying “did so!”, “did not!”.

-- In her state Heb B Vaccine is mandated with NO opt out. --

No Opt out in Minnesota? Don't be sure about that!

www.nvic.org/Vaccine-Laws/state-vaccine-requirements/minnesota.aspx

If a notarized statement signed by the minor child's parent or by the emancipated person is submitted to the person having supervision of the school or child care facility stating that the person has not been immunized as prescribed because of the conscientiously held beliefs of the parent of the minor child or of the emancipated person, the immunizations specified in the statement shall not be required. This statement must also be forwarded to the commissioner of the department of health.

That is almost exactly the same as in Texas; and that sort of regime applies to ALL vaccinations, in both states.

I can look up and link to the relevant statutory provisions, if you like. I did look that material up for Texas. If you want to review the source legislation and regulations (for Texas), start at Post 119 in this thread, and read down to post 124.

I think we'd both be surprised at the number of people who vote based on superficial criteria. Appearance, sound of voice, etc.

There is a big difference between not making something mandatory and banning it. I would resist mandatory pennicillin shots, too, but that doesn’t mean I would seek to ban it.
