Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a slim lead on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the latest Winthrop Poll of South Carolina voters.

The poll, taken last week, shows Perry with 29.8 percent support from Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, to Romney's 26.6 percent. No other candidate is in the double digits.

It's pretty clear, it's going to be Perry or Romney. If the conservative votes continue to be split among the several other candidates, who have no chance of winning the nomination, Romney may squeak by and get the nomination. This is something to think about for conservatives -- do you want Romney to be the GOP nominee, who will then be beaten by Obama?

For anyone that believes Rick Perry or Mitt Romney have the intentions, personal courage or respect for our Constitution to radically challenge the Democrat, Republican & Media Parties, by taking the “extreme” steps that MUST occur to save America, I have some land about 30 miles due south of Pensacola, Florida to sell you. Both Perry & Romney are pretend Tea Party, “go along to get along” politicians that will ensure America’s collapse if elected in 2012.

Agree with what you are saying, but I think Perry and Romney have an equal chance of beating Obama. Presidential elections are always about the incumbent.

Looks like you agree.

It is time for a conservative to enter the race.

You are spot on.

One of the reasons McCain got in was a split vote.

If you look at the votes for Bachmann, Cain, and Perry, they clearly outweigh RINO Romney together.

My first choice was Bachmann, but as it is now, I will vote for Perry as he is FAR better than Romney.

More and more I get the impression that MB is Romney's 'conservative' stalking horse. McCain had Gov Huckleberry, Romney has Bachmann.

Moreso in second-term presidential elections, where the incumbent may actually be running.

wow ... the last South Carolina poll had the race at

Perry 36%
Romney 13%

It’s scary as heck that Romney is even remotely close to Perry in South Carolina.

They are light years better than Obama. A politician, by definition, will do things that will make a conservative scratch his head. Sitting home will not only re-elect The Zero, it will also cost us in the house and senate, just like it did in 2008. Want to give Zero another filibuster proof senate? What’s the worst that could happen?

Getting tired of these The politicos polls on the GOP side.

I’d like to see a poll wherein (.)bama is measured against some democrap potential threat. I’d love to see one in NY where it says Hitlery has a lead on the incombent incompetent. Or Nader leads in California.

No one but Paul would do anything drastic (and Pauls a nut).

Perry is more conservative than Bush, and that’s as good as were going to get at the moment.

If I were to list in order of conservative beliefs the Presidents of my lifetime from most liberal to most conservative:

most liberal

Obama
Carter
Ford
Clinton
Nixon
George HW Bush
George W Bush
Reagan

most conservative

If I were to add Perry and Romney along with the Republican losers of the past to the list, this is what it would look like.

Obama
Carter
Ford
Clinton
Romney
McCain
Nixon
Dole
George HW Bush
George W Bush
Perry
Reagan

Perry or Romney or “Sit Home” are not the only three options. Being better than Obama is your standard? Wow, my english bulldog is more qualified than Obama. One, only one leader, proven, vetted, wildly popular and courageous as hell could beat Mr. ObamneyCare & Merck’s top Texas salesman with half her brain tied behind her back - Governor Sarah Palin.

So you think the American electorate will elect an extremist? Even Obama isn’t an extremist, he’s a limp wristed socialist. More importantly the limp wristed socialist ran as a moderate/left candidate.

I don’t know who you support but I suspect you are seeing something in your candidate that isn’t there.

You looking for national salvation from these faux-conservatives is like Obama looking for honor within his administration. If you are so clueless to think an establishment hack, one being “far less bad” than the Marxist in our White House is an adequate selection for restoring constitutional honor in America, after 30 years of anti-Reagan progressive-light policies from the republican ruling-class - you need to have your head examined. Perhaps you should go and troll all by yourself.

Governor Sarah Palin - She will electrify the race, she will get in and she will become our next President. She is a providential leaders, skilled, vetted and proven to have the executive smarts and common sense that our nations craves. Thanks for asking!
