U.S. Charges Bass Pro Shops with Racial Bias (Owner is Republican)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 9/22/11 | A Zimmerman

Bass Pro Shops have developed a devoted following by packing cavernous stores full of rods and reels, camping and hunting gear, camouflageclothingandanimal trophy-heads.

Behind the scenes, the retailer discriminates in hiring, the government said in a lawsuit filed Wednesday.

Among the allegations: Bass Pro managers repeatedly refused to hire non-white workers as clerks, cashiers or managers, and used discriminatory language to explain their reasoning, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which filed its suit in federal district court in Houston.

For instance, the government alleged a Bass Pro human-resources executive told federal investigators that the assistant ...

Robert Morris, I believe, is the founder and owner of Bass Pro Shops. He is a good friend of the Bush family, and a strong Republican.

Any wonder why Hussein is going after him with the race card?

Desperation.

Quote from the article:

“...For instance, the government alleged a Bass Pro human-resources executive told federal investigators that the assistant manager of a store in Louisiana rejected a qualified black candidate, saying “he really didn’t fit the company profile.” *When pressed, the store manager used a racial slur to say that the stores don’t hire blacks*, according to the complaint. “

If that’s true, then I have no issue with the investigation. That kind of thing shouldn’t be going on no matter what kind of store it is.

How many black people are hunting and fishing aficionados? If some are, and they apply to Bass Pro Shops, they ought to be considered fairly. And if they did but were not, shame on Bass Pro. But I think they want people knowledgeable in hunting and fishing, not just any old person who walks in the door.

The issue should be whether or not the person is qualified to do the job.

If I owned a fishin’ shop and a black person applied, the issue would be simply whether or not they knew and understood the sport.

I'm a middle-aged white guy. I doubt that Victoria Secret's would hire me to work on their floor selling lingerie. If I applied to work at some mall-store selling trendy teen clothing, they'd probably laugh me out of there. Don't think I'd be successful getting on the Hooter's waitstaff either.

None of the above is discriminatory in my opinion. I just don't fit the profile. On the other hand, I'd probably feel right at home selling rods and reels at the Pro shop.

My family camped for over a decade, and we still go to our lake house for boating and skiing. I can honestly say in all this time, I have never seen a single black family.
I think it’s more a component of culture than race. Maybe there’s a lawsuit against BET for excluding whites from their tv broadcast. How about black colleges or beauty pageants. I guess we all know it is only possible to be a racist if you’re white.

>>> If I owned a fishin’ shop and a black person applied, the issue would be simply whether or not they knew and understood the sport. >>>

That’s proof you don’t own one, because if you did, your ONLY issue would be will my customer base like this guy/girl and feel comfortable with them. And if your customer base is 99% white and three quarters of those have confederate flags on their pick up trucks, you might have a notion on just who fits your profile.

Meanwhile, if you owned a furniture rental store or urban music store, you’d have a different profile.

How about this for a radical liberty idea: business owners can hire whoever they want for whatever reason they want - and for those who don’t like who they hire - they are free to open their own businesses and hire who THEY want.

Ah. So one idiot statement qualifies an investigation of the whole company, eh? The presence of a moron doesn’t indicate racism. Otherwise, Hussein and Biden would have been behind bars years ago.

Sorry, but context is everything....under what circumstances was the word used, was it in addition to qualifications, etc. Racism is despicable, but the indictment of an entire business is a big deal, and I do not believe Hussein and his cabal are good judges of such matters.

This reeks of politically motivated targeting.

If you really believe in that so-rad idea of hiring who I want, then you shouldn’t have a problem with me owning a bass shop, in the deep south, serving those with confederate flags on their trucks, hiring whom I think would be an asset to the business, regardless of his skin colour.

That is, if you really believe that, as opposed to other possibilities, eh?

From what I understand, Bass Pro is intending...or WAS intending, to build a mega attraction in Peoria that would have brought much economic development into the area. It seems as if this administration is hellbent on PREVENTING ANY economic growth if it doesn’t involve either the unions or government. THIS stinks to high, high heaven.

The solution to this “problem” is simple and covers nearly any and every contingency:

Hire some outrageously HOT African-American-Asian-Hispanic women to be clerks etc.

The customers will show up in droves.

Don’t know what you think you are reading into my post, but no, I have no problem with the owner of any business hiring whoever he or she thinks he or she should hire. If we allow Hooters to hire only good looking women with nice bodies - and we do - then we should allow any other business to hire for whatever reasons they want to.

Where did you think I was going with this? If a business owner and an employee reach an agreement they both like, then it shouldn’t be the business of the government or of applicants who didn’t get the job to interfere.

It’s called liberty.

No prob.

Your example, no offense, also used the stereotyped southern confederate who does have an issue with dealing with people other cultures.

When it comes to racism, my honest belief is that people have the right to associate with whom they choose. I think that, eventually qualiications and ability will eventually trump things like a person’s skin, because in something like a competitive sport like bass fishing, if some guy knows his stuff so well that he can help you improve your results, you’re going to give less weight to whom he is and more weight as to what he can do.

I don't believe for a minute that a human resources executive said this to a federal investigator. The key words are “the government alleged”. Philosophically I agree with all you said.

Now: To be truthful, I was tweaking you a little bit - not on the government issue, but on the “what I would do if I owned such and such a business” issue.

I’ve owned enough businesses to know that I have no idea what I would do if I owned another business - because until you do, you have no idea what you would do. Being a business owner, perhaps I am overly sensitive to the proclamations made by non business owners on what I should do or what they would do. I’ll admit that.

I also know that technical knowledge and ability is totally irrelevant if a given person will not make your customer base comfortable. Yes, I used a stereotype but that was simply because it was an easy example to make a point.

It’s called liberty.

That's exactly right.

Private individuals/property owners have a natural right to associate or disassociate with whomever they please for any reason whatsoever.

The idea of a business being a "public charge" is completely abstract concept created out of whole cloth by statists and 60s liberals.

Private property owners forcibly share an ownership interest with the collective.

I could probably count on one hand, with fingers left over, the number of BassPro shoppers that give a rip what this pathetic administration says. If the government makes too much of a stink about their “alleged allegations”, it will probably give BPS a spike in sales. In fact, just by coincidence, I will be near a BPS this weekend. I was already planning to go since I never miss an opportunity to go to their store but now I will drop as many bucks as I can there.

Large companies are hit all the time with things like this. I remember that the local Sears store had a vastly incompetent lady working in a big ticket area who accused them of racial discrimination when they finally fired her. They gave her money to settle the accusation, terrified of getting bad press for blacks constituted a big part of the customer base. I do know black fishermen and hunters, not very many but some, they are a minority in a minority. I can't see Pro Bass not making them prove this in court, blacks are not a significant part of their customer base.

>>> I think it’s a defensible position to let somebody go, despite their abilities and qualifications, if it’s hurting your customer relations >>>

It has to be defensible, because “hurting customer relations” means it is hurting your sales which means it is putting your business at risk. If liberal TV networks can discriminate on looks and voice tone and so on because they want their viewers (ie customer base) to like their on air talent, then a Bass Pro Shop or a Hooters or a hardware store or a pawn shop can discriminate to please their customers too.

It’s the same concept. And by the way, if anyone were to be offended by Bass Pro Shops hiring of mostly a certain type of person - then they are free to shop somewhere else - say at Dicks - where the profile might be different.

Like I said, it’s called liberty. It works if left alone.

If a person is qualified they should get fair and equal treatment, NOT special sympathetic oh your race were slaves we are sorry, here is the keys to my car, my house and my bank account.

I hire a person to elevate my business productivity. If that person by race appears to influence negative profits then I am making a bad hiring decision.

And the same applies for our elected officials. Race does cause an impact.
