The roads are not built by the government. They are literally built by countless small businesses who buy trucks, hire employees and build their infrastructure to be able to lay asphalt, which they buy. They contract with other businesses, or with the government, to build the roads. They must meet requirements to fulfill their contract. If they do not they do not get paid. They take all of the risk, buy the equipment, hire the workers, pay for the supplies, to be able to sign a contract to build a road.
Where does the money come from to build the road? It comes from the road builder, the office builder, the home builder, the truck maker, the clothing and food and gas business and all of their employees. The government does not build the road. It facilitates the construction of the road by taking a portion of everyone’s income, the business owner, the laborer, the trucker, everyone who makes money based on their labor.
If that were the end of the story there would be no problem. If the government served the interests of those who make money so they could make more money there would be no problem. But that is not the end of the story.
The government decides every detail of the businesses activity and controls every detail of the laborers activity. Then the government decides how much of the earnings each business owner and each employee gets to keep. IOW the government controls, or tries to control, all of the activity in the business world, the private sector. The government is becoming the putative owner of the private sector, controlling its every detail.
What is the rationale for government takeover of the economy? It is we the people, the statist argues, who are the government. But the people are not the government. The government is an increasingly elitist, isolated cadre of managers who determine what the rest of us do based on their own interests. We the people need the government to get out of our hair and out of our pockets.
We will willingly give the government enough money to build roads, pay for civil protection and control our borders. We will keep the rest for ourselves. We are smart enough to decide how to spend our money. The government is not.
I've started putting it that way to liberals when I talk to them, and so far all I've gotten is stammering and a guilty laugh.
