To listen to the recent Republican Presidential debates, you'd think illegal immigration was the biggest threat to the U.S. economy—not to mention to the rule of law, our social fabric and national security. We hate to spoil the political reverie, but the real immigration story these days is how many fewer illegal migrants are trying to get into the land of the free.
That's the news from the Department of Homeland Security, which reports that border apprehensions have dropped to their lowest level in nearly 40 years. For fiscal 2010, arrests were 463,000, down from 724,000 in 2008—a one-third decline in two years.

That is the problem!! Apprehensions!! Just means the Dept. of Homeland Security isn’t doing it’s JOB!! NOT that there are fewer criminals. Yes..CRIMINALS..
Obviously there are other reasons why border apprehensions could be down.

Who is this “we”? Many businesses cannot afford to pay more, because they operate on very low profit margins. If they paid higher wages, they’d be out of business and ALL their workers would become unemployed.
That's because it is...one of them, anyway.

What are you talking about?
Would you care to explain how they are being rewarded $100,000? They have to pay their own tuition, they can not get federal or state loans to help with their tuition they have to pay it themselves or get someone to sponsor them. They have to have been in state for 3 years (paying the property taxes and sales taxes) as opposed to US citizens from out of state who get the same thing for only being in the state for 1 years.
If the government admits to 12 million illegals here, it is 50 million or more! If there's one button on my control board to nix a candidate, it is immigration. I have no sympathy for their tuition-needy children, their public trough parents, their grandparents or any of their relatives. I want them out of my country, period! How hard is that to understand?
Does anyone really believe anything the Department of Homeland Security has to say? They lie through their teeth by direction of the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
The number of arrests are down because they just don’t arrest anymore. They detain and release.
The mexicans have 4 1/2 percent unemployment. The USA has 9% unemployment.
Why is itthat the USA has to take mexican illegals.
Heck if we returned the productive trained middle class mexicans with their money — back to mexico — they would have a revolution in that country that would do them some good.
As it is, we’re only returning the trained criminals— in their thousands—which is progressively destabilizing Mexico.
Look, an illegal nanny in California was making $20/hour before the recession. That’s tax free.
Why do you think that so many families in CA were hiring illegals to work in their homes instead of legal workers? -—because no legal workers applied for the job. Of course the legal worker would not have been paid $20/hr, because the employer would have lowered the pay to make up for the employer share of payroll taxes.
In the Seattle area, stores cannot hire clerks for less $13/hr. People would rather collect unemployment or welfare. Target was hiring people from another county and paying someone to drive them an hour away and paying the employees for their travel time because no one near Seattle wanted the job.
I don’t consider immigration my most important issue, but that doesn’t mean it is unimportant or that I’d support an open borders candidate. Already we’re seeing that congress is unable to pass something as simple as E-Verify...there shouldn’t be any debate about that. All employers should use this easy system to verify that people who they are paying are in fact working here legally.
This will not save Rick Perry. Big Sis runs Homelame Security now. I don’t believe a word she says.
She considers conservatives more of a threat than illegal aliens.

It is a great security threat and destabilizing our country! The other lie is that there is only about 12 million illegals when there is probably closer to 30 million!
The Ron Paul people are right about illegal immigration.
If the illegals are legalized and the demographic shift continues apace— Texas is going to go the way of California —followed by Florida.
At which point republicans will be effectively shut out of national politics.
From what he's said in the debates, I don't know how you can reach that conclusion.
The Wall Street Journal is known for its belief in the rule of law as it relates to strong border security policies.
