Thomas Sowell: Attacks on Perry unwarranted, unwise
Standard Times San Angelo ^ | Sept. 27, 2011 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/27/2011 3:14:20 PM PDT by Clairity

The biggest mischaracterization of Perry's position has been on immigration. The fact that he has more confidence in putting "boots on the ground" along the border, instead of relying on a fence that can be climbed over or tunneled under where there is no one around, is a logistical judgment, not a question of being against border control.

Texas Rangers already have been put along the border to guard the places where the federal government has failed to guard it. Former Sen. Rick Santorum's sound-bite attempts to paint Perry as soft on border control have apparently been politically successful, judging by polls.

But his repeated interrupting of Perry's presentation of his case during the recent debate is the kind of cheap political trick that contributes nothing to public understanding and much to public misunderstanding.

I have far more questions about those who would blow this error up into something that it is not. Error-free leaders don't exist — and we don't want to end up settling for a warm body.

Ultimately, this is not about Perry. It is about a process that can destroy any potential leader, even when the country needs a new leader with a character that the "gotcha" attackers demonstrate they do not have.

That’s like saying loading a blank every other bullet in the clip is ‘strategic ordinance’.

How is that remotely like strategic fencing?

INTERESTING POINTS.

But if Reagen was running now with that record I don’t know what he would be called.

There are about 5 Perry bashers to every one Perry supporter on this and every other thread about Perry

Yes, but they post over and over and over and over and over and over.

So far the list of RINOS includes:
Rush
Sowell
Savage
DeVores
Rubio
Most of the SC Legislature

Have I forgotten anyone?

You missed the memo.
These people are no longer RINO’s, they are liberals.

Agreed. The circular firing squad is nuts.

Thomas Sowell gone “Alzheimers?”

I realize that he is a libertarian, not a conservative, but Perry is anathma to personal liberties.

MyL, and all

The bottom line is that it is the responsibility of every American citizen, elected or not, to maintain our border. The Feds are indeed responsible for the actual deportation, but you, me, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, Michael Moore and the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks High School Football Booster Club are responsible for making that happen and supporting laws conductive to that happening - not coddling and benefiting illegals by making it easier for them to stay here. All at the expense of the American citizen and taxpayer.

Do you disagree? If so, how and why exactly?

You cannot in any way shape or form legally justify one ‘illegal’ being here.

It then follows, logically, rationally and legally, that any law that assists them in being or STAYING here goes against the fact that they are here Illegally to begin with.

Do you disagree? Yes or no.

Go back to my post 2 hours ago and point by point refute it.
If you cannot, then your and others whole defense of Perry and his actions/policies on the subject collapses. I understand that you like and support him. That’s your choice. But adopting the policies that liberals themselves promote is NOT a conservative thing to do. It may not make you a dyed in the wool lib, but it’s not Conservative wither. You would be a Moderate.

Again, please refute on a point by point basis if you believe me to be wrong.

A full clip and a full fence are better than a partial clip (firing random blanks) and a partial fence (which according to Perry supporters illegals can tunnel under anyway so why even have a ‘strategic fence in the first place?

A RINO has to be registered as a Republican.

Sowell is not.

I don’t know either. But the bottom line is that it was a mistake and the Dems compounded it by making the same further mistakes that Perry is proposing/has proposed.

Honestly, all kidding and partisanship toward candidates aside, look at the original amnesty plan and how quickly they undermined it. Look at HOW they undermined it and compare to Perry’s current stated ideas and actions concerning LaRaza, education etc.

They are very simmilar. So what does that tell you?

This is not his first Clanger. During the Bush 41 and clinton years, he was full of them.

I have patrolled the border on foot and by plane in Az.(as a citizen, for free)
You call them in to BP and they round them up.
Then they get turned loose by the Feds.
Some of them end up in our jails.
Some get deported, most don’t.

It always slays me when people think I am open borders.

Perry is troublesome on guns.

He refused to answer the National Gun Rights questionnaire.

The reason Israel doesn’t waste assets in the Negev desert is because there is nothing out there.

Texas has a lot of the same issues.

Perry says aerial surveillance is more effective in these areas, and he is correct.
I know, from personal experience.

Then right after you refute point by point the points I have made in several prior posts, explain to me how you think having laws to benefit illegals staying here assists your personal borderwalks and calls to the BP.

If those laws were not in place and your governor was not pushing for them, less illegals would come across the border seeking their benefit.

Do you disagree? If so, why?

Now if a FULL and defended fence existed, even FEWER of the illegals would be ABLE to get here to take advantage of the above.

So you disagree? If so, why?

>> “which of our candidates is going to deport the illegals who are already here?” <<

.
We need notdeport a single one; just enforce the laws on hiring illegals and they will deport themselves. They have no desire to live here in poverty.

I live in AZ. The cartels are rerouting farther every day into open desert to dodge the BP. A solid, unbroken fence and BP/NG patrols are harder to get over/under/through/across than a wide open border with ‘nothing’ in it.

Do you disagree? If so, why?
