Well, I pinged all of the loudest squawkers and nobody wants to actually engage in a head-to-head discussion.
As far as I’m concerned, this issue is dead. If anybody brings it up again in an effort to hijack another thread, I’ll redirect them here.
No more sniping on this point.
Excellent post. Nobody can accuse Levin of being anything less than a consummate conservative.
In his eyes, AT THAT TIME, Romney was the lesser of two evils.
The game has changed.
Great point! :)
I remember it well. I just couldn’t stomach Romney, and there were LOTS of threads just gushing about him, and Freepers even calling themselves “Mittens”.
Mind you, this was late in the primary season, but it was still very prevalent on FR.
I was a Fredhead, and when he crashed, I wasn’t excited about ANY of the options left, but I read everything I could on FR. I was called a troll, when I had some sincere questions about something Romney had claimed. LOL. Good times. ;^)
Perry endorsed right to carry.<<<
Perry is also the only one running who shoots back at illegals and has a Hispanic constituency. Heck of a deal.
Perry hustles business out of California and from all over, sustains a pro-business atmosphere, and presides over the state who has ably produced HALF of all JOBS in the country.
So, lets vote for Cain. Let’s vote for Romney. LOL.
“The problem for Romney is that much of his support back then was to stop McCain...not FOR him.”
You’re exactly right. You have to look at things in context. Between Romney and McCain...Romney wins. He was FAR from a dream candidate, but that was all we had. I would worry about Cain a lot more if he supported Huckster or McCain - but given that Obama (and maybe Hillary) were the other side, why should Cain or any other Republican be expected to “sit it out” which is what people are saying...if they criticize support for Romney in 2008.
From left are: Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.; Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas; Jim Gilmore, former governor of Virginia; Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor; Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.; Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas.; Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.; Tommy Thompson, former secretary of Health and Human Services; Rudy Giuliani, former New York mayor; and Sen. John McCain.
Remember all these dopes? I threw up in my mouth a little remembering all that mediocrity in one place.
I sure do.
I was a FredHead until he practically fell asleep during his abbreviated campaign.
we didn’t have much of a choice there.
That’s the main reason we were so fired up when McCain brought Palin on board. We *finally* had a strong conservative in the mix.
It was a hard election cycle.
That was then, this is now. I pray he has gotten more info on the creep (Romney being the creep).
I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER vote for Mittens. I know too much.
He probably sees himself as VP material as well.

Nah, I can’t see Romney ever settling for 2nd spot, esp. to Cain.

Well, in 2008 the alternative was McCain
True, but the point I would make is the "Perry endorsed Gore" thing looks worse because his supporters here blantantly lied about it. The fact Perry endorsed Gore 20 years ago really isn't that relevant today, and would have gone away quickly if he hadn't started with the history revisionism and his supporters here fallen in line to repeat the myths. Then, the truth about Gore's record back then (he had an 8% conservative rating, placing to the LEFT of openly socialist Bernie Sanders in 1988!), but his fans STILL would not stop repeating the "Gore was a conservative" myth. It's like the old watergate scandal that killed Nixon. It wasn't the act itself, it was the coverup.
What makes Perry look bad is excuses like this:
'You just don't understand Texas. Texas Democrats back then were the CONSERVATIVE party. They were MORE CONSERVATIVE than most national Republicans. Perry endorsed Gore because Gore was the most conservative candidate running for President in 1988! Al Gore was an old fashioned pro-life, pro-gun, pro-traditional family, pro-tobacco, conservative Democrat back then who hadn't endorsed global warming yet'
That little fib would be like other candidates' camps claiming:
SANTORUM
"Here's a little primer for you NON-PENNSYVANIANS: Arlen Specter in 2006 wasn't like Arlen Specter today. Back then, Specter was a CONSERVATIVE Republican. In fact, he was MORE conservative than Pat Toomney! Santorum ONLY supported Specter because he was the most conservative candidate running in the GOP primary at the time"
CAIN
"The Mitt Romney of 2008 wasn't like the Mitt Romney now. This was Mitt Romney BEFORE he passed Romneycare. Mitt Romney in 2008 was the MOST conservative candidate running for President. He was even more conservative than Duncan Hunter! Cain endorsed Romney out of a desire to run the strongest conservative we had"
BACHMANN
"OF COURSE Michele Bachmann supported Carter in 1980. You guys don't get it. Back then, the two parties were on opposite sides as they are now. Carter was the pro-life, pro-gun, anti-Soviet, limited government conservative and Ronald Reagan was the liberal. Carter didn't become the liberal nut we know now until after 1984. That's the only reason Bachmann endorsed him, she's ALWAYS been a staunch conservative"
PALIN
"Sarah only endorsed John McCain because he was the best conservative running in Arizona in 2010. You guys HATE Arizonians, DON'T YOU? Here in Arizona, we know J.D. Hayworth isn't nearly as conservative as John McCain. It's an Arizona thing. You have to be from Arizona to get it. In Arizona, ALL the most conservative candidates support amnesty. OUR amnesty for illegals isn't like the amnesty in the other 49"
But we don't here that kind of history revisionism from the other camps, do we? It's the Perry people who like engaging in tall tales.
That is bad, but it was over 20 years ago. Perry's endorsement of the cross-dressing liberal freak Rudy Giuliani was just 4 years ago and, at the time, Perry passed on Fred Thompson, he passed on Mike Huckabee, he passed Tom Tancredo and he passed on Duncan Hunter. He then said the 'man' below was 'the most conservative candidate in the race'.
I agree with your effort to stop the sniping at GOP candidates, Marie.
It’s a real stretch, though, to mention that Perry (in the TX state legislature and a Dem at the time), said he was supporting Gore ...in 1988! That was over two decades ago and Perry converted to the GOP in 1989 because the TX Dems had moved too far to the liberal side and he didn’t agree with their views any longer.
Good point, the Giuliani endorsement proves that Perry’s support of liberal candidates wasn’t a one-time, isolated incident. He’s claimed liberals in BOTH parties were the “conservative” candidate.
Romney endorsed McCain’s re-election bid as well as supporting Scott Brown.
Palin endorsed McCain, Perry, Fiorina and Whitman. Supports Hatch based on comments.
Perry ran and supported Gore as a democrat. He Endorsed Giuliani as you know.
Michele Bachmann ,as a young woman, supported Jimmy Carter and worked to elect him in 1976, but she then switched to the Republican Party.
And Herman Cain endorsed Romney. But in 2008 there wasn’t much of a choice left. So even Conservative radio supported Romney over McCain.
And I am sure fellow freepers will drag out people Christie has supported who are anti-conservative as well.
So that is the present reality.
Yes, but Perry felt the need to support Gore for 1988 and run his campaign. So it must have been brutal on him because only after that experience did he switch parties in 1989. So it highlights to some his confusing past. Which is further mired with then supporting Guliani who is not the most conservative politician or a tea party favorite. Thus, some people don’t know which way the wind blows for him. Fact is the relationship with Guliani is a close one. To the point his campaigned for Guliani in 08.
Well then Romney can repay the favor by Endorsing Cain this Time
