His business acumen, his conservative credentials and his plainspokenness drove his popularity up quickly.
But as with many politicians on both sides of the aisle, the more the public sees of him, the less appetizing he becomes. He has repeatedly revealed his lack of understanding of key issues.
CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked Cain if he could imagine as president giving in to an al-Qaida demand to free all of the hundreds of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay in exchange for freeing one American soldier.
"I could see myself authorizing that kind of transfer, but what I would do is, I would make sure that I got all of the information, I got all of the input, considered all of the options," Cain replied. "And then the president has to be the president and make a judgment call. I could make that call if I had to."
Hours later, Cain denied that he had said what he said. Moderator Anderson Cooper asked him to explain his answer to Blitzer.
"Let me say this first, I would have a policy that we do not negotiate with terrorists," Cain said. Cooper pointed out that authorizing a transfer of Gitmo prisoners with al-Qaida is negotiating with terrorists.
"I don't recall him saying that it was al-Qaida related," Cain said.
So what's worse: His willingness to free all Gitmo detainees in a negotiation with al-Qaida, or his denial that he said what he had just said?
Cain's "I-didn't-say-that" routine continued on illegal immigration. First he said he would build an electrified fence all along the U.S.-Mexican border. He later said he was kidding. Then he doubled back and said "It might be electrified. I'm not walking away from that. I just don't want to offend anyone."

There you go again...
Garbage.
Well we can count the Charlotte Observer in the tank for Romney.
You can still hope...I am for the Cain train...
The only fizzle has been Perry.
The guy winning pretty much every state race and winning or tied in most national polls is clearly ‘fizzling’. The media is evil.
Sen. Obama is a man of uncommon intelligence. He's a graduate of Columbia University with a law degree from Harvard, where he was editor of the law review. He bypassed lucrative job opportunities to become a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor Chicago neighborhoods plagued with crime and joblessness. In 2004, he became the third African American since Reconstruction to win a Senate seat. His record there is not extensive. It is impressive.
- the Observer in 2008.
He may - or may not. Perry may rebound - or he may not, etc.
Cain polling ahead of Perry in Texas

Who is going to fizzle...and who has already fizzled?
Good luck with all that.
A vote for Perry is a vote for Romney. Fortunately, there will be so few of them that it won’t make much of a difference.
I am sick of the fighting. The MSM has decided to help the GOP destroy itself with these BS debates. The entire field should meet, come to some kind of an agreement on debate ground rules where they are debating the issues not constantly defending themselves from attacks from the moderators and each other and then force the debate hosts to conform to it or refuse to participate. All this is doing is destroying the party and giving Obama sound bites.
If Cain fizzles, it will be because another conservative like Brewer gets in the race. The Rockefeller wing isn't getting any traction this cycle.
A harpie hit and run....La Raza Ricky’s people are desperate.
The candidates are just reflecting their supporters, who are fighting each other tooth and nail, at least on FR anyway.
What I love is all these posts acting like the waffling is somehow not happening. It’s very indicative of an unpolished candidate who hasn’t got principles set in stone. Instead, response to this article is “oh, they’re Romney fans,” or “oh, you’re a Perry fan.” Can’t it just be that Cain isn’t the candidate people are hoping he’ll be? Does the guy have to be imagined as perfect at the expense of reality?
I don’t like him because of 9-9-9, but he’s proving he’s not a great candidate on top of the policy concerns he presents.
another McClatchy paper left of the NY slimes guess they are scared of Cain
