Juliet Marine Systems, Inc. Announces the First Supercavitating Ship, GHOST
Juliet Marine Systems, Inc. press release ^ | 8/10/2011 | Juliet Marine Systems, Inc.

Portsmouth, NH (August 10, 2011) -

Juliet Marine Systems, Inc. (JMS) announced today that the US Navy/USPTO have removed Secrecy Orders previously applied to GHOST. For the first time, Juliet Marine is able to release photographs of GHOST, the first super-cavitating craft, to the public. GHOST was designed and built by US Citizens for the US Navy at no cost to the government to protect US sailors, servicemen and servicewomen. Development of the first ever super-cavitating craft, in many ways, is as difficult as breaking the sound barrier. GHOST is a combination aircraft/boat that has been designed to fly through an artificial underwater gaseous environment that creates 900 times less hull friction than water. GHOST technology adapts to manned or unmanned, surface or submerged applications. Any Navy possessing GHOST technology could operate in international waters undetected and would have an overwhelming advantage against conventional ships.

Imagine hitting a whale while driving this thing.

Will this help in Bass Fishing Tournaments?

Can someone explain the “supercavitation” thingy?

Combine this with “Loki” and a whole new battle area
opens up.

Google DARPA+Loki

“Loki” DARPA’s underwater craft equivilent to a
manned jet fighter. Look it up, “vortex” drive
and all. They didn’t have a budget of millions
without getting something for the money.

Interesting. How do they create the cavitation, sound waves?

Super-cavitation technology allegedly allows the Russian Shkval torpedo to operate at a submerged speed of 220 mph.

This isn’t the same thing that was being built in Alaska, was it?
The one in Alaska was being built to combat the pirates.

Create a bubble of gas or vapor around a submarine hull. It reduces friction dramatically and lets the ship move at very high speeds, maybe 4 or 5 times faster than currently possible.

Can someone explain the “supercavitation” thingy?

In a nutshell, you create a cloud of bubbles around your hull and then all you have to do is move through the bubbles instead of water.

Of course, you have to keep the cloud of bubbles going. And generally propellers won't work in bubbles, so you have to use jets or rockets. But frictions drops to almost zero, and your speed is limited by the speed with which your can create the bubble cloud.

cavitation: is when, basically, bubbles are produced from any propeller/pump/etc.

I’m guessing they are purposely producing “bubbles” to lower the coefficient of friction against the water....but I’m not sure how that is good on the “stealthiness” of the craft.

GHOST could make LCS a defensible platform for combat - LCS is not currently rated for combat.

Uh, doesn't LCS mean Littoral COMBAT Ship? This Ghost ship sure looks pretty cool - and weird.

Moving along at +200MPH under water seems cool until you consider the forces exerted upon such craft due to any instability causing water to come back in contact with the hull.

Suddenly, you just got smacked by a wave going 200+mph.

Sorry, my bogus alarm is going off on this one. That design isn't flying underwater through anything. And I seriously doubt if it can "fly" through the air either. Maybe WIG. Maybe.

Wait a minute, I’ve seen that photo before...
Any official Navy releases?
As far as I know there are no photos of Loki
on the web.

Looks to me like a couple of ‘Red Necks’ put a couple BIG ol’ inboards on an old F-117. ;-)

UNDETECTED...?! Most supercavitating systems are a type of underwater ROCKET...!

This must use a strong variation on the traditional mechanism and obviously must include the ability to turn.

An early application that used this tech was the Russian “skval” torpedo rocket.
