From homeland security to healthcare, the federal government now has the power to reach further than ever into American society. But so far, the feds have sensibly stayed out of the business of appointing religious leaders.
Now, in a stunning about-face, the Obama Administration has urged the Supreme Court to allow courts to decide virtually any dispute between a church and its ministers. In the administrations view, juries and judges, not congregations and bishops, should have the final say on who is fit for religious ministry. Fundamental questions of theology would be resolved in the same way as slip-and-fall cases. Plaintiffs lawyers would go into a religious feeding frenzy.
The DOJ made this astounding declaration in its brief for a Supreme Court case called Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which some observers have called the most important religious freedom case in 20 years.
The case started when Cheryl Perich, a former teacher at a church-run grade school, wanted to return from a disability-related leave of absence. The school, which is part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, had far exceeded its legal obligations in accommodating her disability. But when some board members expressed concern that she wasnt medically ready for work, she threatened to sue for discrimination.

The story wouldn’t be complete without noting that explicitly religious methods of picking and using the teachers were in use. These were not treated as a standard job, like the guy who sweeps the floor. They were treated as callings that had to go before the congregation. And there were equally religious processes to voluntarily or otherwise rescind callings. That is what makes Caesar’s nose so blatantly inappropriate here.
Just a short shuffle to telling Churches what to believe....
Screw these people. When do we collectively have e-dam-nuff?
This could be the beginning of something awful. Liberals have long preached the sanctity of separating church and state, and now they push this.
Stunning reversal???? From that F#$%^&& MOSLEM???? What a JOKE. To him, there is NO difference between “church” and “state.
Holy Sharia Batsh!+!!
The people who thought it was ok for the court to decide the Sharia law case should be along shortly to say this is fine.
there will be secret masses here like in china — soon
That'd be too funny actually ~ most of them fear Pentecostals much more.
It's not about the theology. At the same time Moslem child custody decisions are, in general, contrary to the civil codes in the United States. Sharia law would have no place in anything involving the custody of a human being.
Yes, there is going to be a parallel prelature, where all the pastors and priest will the picked by the presiding president preferring persons with perverted predelictions.
Gotta read caefully and ping tomorrow.
How much deeper into this hellish nightmare are we going to have to go?
