The family of a Texas man killed when a racing aircraft crashed into spectators in the National Championship Air Races in Reno filed a $25 million lawsuit Tuesday against the pilot's family, a mechanic on the World War II-era aircraft and the Nevada organization that hosted the event.

Oops.

“yet 5 or 6 children die in this country from CHILD ABUSE...EVERY DAY”.

(sorry, brain and fingers are on two different channels at the moment)

when people attend an event like this they have a reasonable expectation of not being killed

I got to airshows and I go to NHL games. Spectators have been killed at both, but I realize that my chance of coming home alive from the Blue Jackets game is 100 times better than from the Dayton International Air Show.

Whereas in NASCAR they go to see someone else get killed.

People going to such events or to car races, oughta know that dying is part of the excitement of the show, and that it could happen to them.

That's news to me. If you want to see athletes die in competition, go to high school football and basketball games.

Well, that may be because you don't stand on the field during the game.

Yeah, made me think about buying a lead sled. It’s the first one that really screwed up on me. I shoot modern ammo the first time out. If that goes well, I try the old surplus, if in good shape, I have.

I just asked one of the Reno Air Race competitors. Answer: Probably yes.

I locked my keys in my 93 Aerostar van the other day. I climbed on top of it with a coat hangar and some wedges stuck in the door when I lost my footing and fell to the ground and nearly broke my left femur when my leg hit the curb. My attorney thinks Ford should have included some type of safety pad that would pop out when the vehicle senses that it’s owner is about to fall off of the roof. We might settle for $50,000 if Ford agrees to put a big warning sticker on the side of their vehicles.

Hockey is played on ice. And the single spectator fatality took place here in Columbus at a game between the Jackets and Calgary. A puck went into the stands and killed a 13 year old girl.

When I go to an airshow I don't sit on the runway, either.

Stuff happens.

Can the mechanic be held liable?

It sounds like the modifications to this plane were pretty radical and probably not type-approved - more of a one-off. I can see how the mechanic and/or designer of the mods could end up sharing part of the liability for this. The total of all of the lawsuits could end up being quite large. Suing the pilot's family, however, is just low.

That´s the early model 707 inverted, right? I saw some video of that a few weeks ago. One of the initial test runs, I think. WOW!!!

This will cast a pall over all aviation events, I'm afraid.

Attorneys have no compunction about lying when there is a jackpot in the offing. They have no moral anchor, and no shame.

And, sadly, otherwise good people somehow believe that they are owed big money when an accident takes a relative.

This, my FRiends, is the true face of "greed".

Some of you might remember that two of my co-workers and their family were victims in the crash. Unfortunately they lost their mother, who was killed instantly. And though all the survivors lost limbs, they are in remarkably good spirits, and in fact my boss is back at work part time!

I’m convinced that the prayers of Freepers helped, and I want to thank you all for your prayers, and hope for your continued prayers for their recovery.

Thanks!

Mark

You want safe? Watch it on TV. There’s been enough accident’s at air shows and races to qualify for fair warning.
