With a fresh incision curving along his hairline from temple to ear visible to all, former South Dakota Gov. Bill Janklow broke down and cried Friday as he announced that he's dying of brain cancer.
But it wasn't the cancer that prompted the tears. It was recalling what he called the one regret of his life: a 2003 car wreck that killed a Minnesota man and ended Janklow's political career.
"I know it's over. I know it's at the end of the trail, but I don't hurt," he said of the weeks-old cancer diagnosis.
Janklow, 72, a Republican who dominated South Dakota politics for more than a quarter century, said the cancer is aggressive and that he's undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The incision along the left side of his face is from a recent procedure during which doctors examined the cancer.
Janklow gathered reporters to make the announcement Friday afternoon, and said he wanted to keep the meeting short because he has trouble forming his thoughts. At various points, he had to pause to find the right words and said he could not recall his specific type of cancer.

He killed a motorcyclist, while DUI, and has never been punished for it. I know what I would do with him. Charlie Daniels has some solid ideas on what should be done with people like him.
We are better than that type of thinking. I hope.
try compassion...learn about forgiveness...it’s a beautiful thing.
Yeah, I'm gonna go with that plan for Judgement Day...
I imagine he’s punished himself more than any court could.
Well said.
“He killed a motorcyclist, while DUI, and has never been punished for it”.
I believe with a little research, you will find both of those points are NOT true.
I wouldn’t wish brain cancer on my worst enemy!
Very well put. We are not here to judge. Especially when it is not our situation to deal with.
He was convicted of 2nd degree manslaughter, spent time in jail and parole. There was some contention that he had a diabetic seizure that caused the collision.
He was the former governor and was at the time a sitting member of the house of representatives. The worst thing about this was that when he resigned from the House, Stephanie Herseth, a POS socialist democrat took his seat.
Janklow was not drunk and he was tried, convicted, sentenced and served his time.
You forgot to include justice.
The why have you judged SFC's comments?
Prayers for him.

I am one of hundreds of South Dakotans who were the target of Janklow’s bullying. While I was taught to pray for those who persecute you, I have a sense of relief that Janklow will soon face the ultimate Judge who he cannot bully and will make him honestly account for what he has done. Were Janklow a prudent man he would spend the rest of his days apologizing and seeking forgiveness starting with the families of Randy Scott, the motorcyclist he killed while running a stop sign while speeding, and Gina Score, 14 year old girl literally run to death in a Janklow designed juvenile “boot camp”. However, knowing Janklow he will likely remain arrogant to the end.
Was she appointed or did she win an election? And if she's still there, the people of SD must want socialists representing them.
