Ford Unleashes a 200 MPH Mustang

When Chevrolet unveiled the 580 hp 2012 Camaro ZL1 and its high-tech magnetically-adjustable suspension, ostensibly claiming the title of king of the pony cars, the folks from Ford were oddly unfazed.

“Don’t worry,” they said, “wait until you see what we have in the works.”

They weren’t kidding.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 will come packing a 650 hp supercharged engine that Ford says is the most powerful production V8 in the world. The 5.8-liter mill sends its 600 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber driveshaft.

That is very fast and it’s not easy to do, and do it without killing yourself.

I wait to see actual data for such claims.

Thank you Ford for making the world safe for excessive excess just for the fun of it.

What do you think Enterprise, Dollar, National, Alamo etc. would get per day to rent one of these? ;-) You can pre-pay gas with rental cars, do you think they'd let you pre-pay speeding tickets?

As a former race car driver (I set a class record at the IHRA Bonneville Track in 1981) let me tell you: 200 mph is fast!

At 140 mph I could barely make out the telephone poles racing past me as I headed down the track. Back then I raced Chevy’s but I have given up on the new ones since GM became Government Motors.

I’ve done over 145 in a Supra Turbo on a highway. That was super fast. So 200 has to such a great rush.

You did it on a track. my experience was on a Hwy that the speed limit was only 55. When I dropped down to 55, felt I could get out of the car and walk.

Congratulations on the record!

I believe that! You can’t turn your head fast enough to catch a NASCAR race car fly by you when you’re next to the track at Daytona!

That’s Crazy Speed!

200 MPH is 300ft per second. The length of 1 football field per second. Talk about a pucker factor.

Are they still using a live rear axle so you break loose on every mild corner? I think they took that technology from the Model T. (just a joke folks..)

It takes someone special to be able just to calculate shifting and steering at that speed. I’ve had my 911 up to around 130 and, although I could tell she had a lot more to give, I wasn’t comfortable at all and backed off quickly. (it was legal, at Texas Motor Speedway for club event).

How much do these stupid things cost? I like a little performance but there comes a point when enough is enough. 135mph is probably my point of ENOUGH. I did that on a highway with a hotrodded 440 chrysler(with bias ply tires and drum brakes) back in my teen years. There just isn’t any point in it in my opinion. The roads and traffic just do not permit it.

Like I’ve told people over and over, I just don’t get interested in modern day hot rods...not when a plain ordinary standard sedan STOCK can do 120mph no problem. change out a computer chip and alter the intake and you got yourself another 10mph.

WHO CARES?

My $6000 Kawasaki will do that. I’ve had that up to 155 - And it wasn’t too bad. Loud. Very loud.

Since I became the proud owner of my first Mustang today (And my second this Friday.. Bought one for the wife) I’m gonna ping this !

Of course, I bought myself a 76 Cobra and her a 00 Convertible v6.

I’m surprised to see that the aerodynamics of the Mustang will do 200 mph.

It may be built to go 200 MPH, but unlike NASCAR and Formula 1 cars it is not built to crash at 200 MPH.
