Gay teen murder illustrates schools' challenge

LOS ANGELES (AP) — There were many missed opportunities to prevent the murder of a 15-year-old gay student at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard.

Teachers and students saw a simmering feud between Brandon McInerney and Larry King but said they were either ignored by administrators or did little or nothing to intervene. King's mother said she pleaded with school officials to help tone down her son's increasingly flamboyant behavior. One teacher encouraged King to explore his sexuality and gave him a dress.

Nearly four years after McInerney, then 14, shot King in the head before stunned classmates, plenty of questions remain about what went wrong and what can be learned to prevent future tragedies.

King's death illustrates the difficulty schools have balancing a gay student's civil rights with teaching tolerance to those who feel threatened by or uncomfortable about someone who's different. It also highlighted the importance of setting clear policies to eliminate confusion among educators.

. . .

King's mother, Dawn King, said she met with school officials four days before the February 2008 shooting hoping they would help tone down her son's behavior. She said she was told King had a civil right to explore his sexual identity.

. . .

A bill introduced by Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., is pending before the House Education and Workforce Committee that would prohibit discrimination in public schools against lesbian and gay students.

If passed, violating the Student Non-Discrimination Act could lead to districts losing federal funding. Polis said he had King and other teens like him in mind when he wrote the bill.

I was 12 when I was in the 8th grade. Turned 13 a few days after graduation. To think a 15 year old homosexual could be allowed to make sexual advances on kids in the 8th grade is scary.

Larry King was openly gay, but he shouldn't have to be killed.

Read the article linked in #10. There is more to the story.

King was adopted at age two ...

Thank you for the background. This kid had a lot going against him from the very beginning. Sad.

“I guess the LA Public School System will have to be sued into oblivion...”

I agree that the Lost Angeles Unified School District has many problems, this occured in Ventura, California which is not part of LAUSD.

If it had been a straight male making unwanted advances or stalking a female the law would have been called in.

Forcing a straight kid to suffer the advances led to this.

It's not going to work in the military either.

Any school official who tries to put the brakes on gay behavior would be out of a job, and subject to an ACLU lawsuit.

Larry King had TWO mommies.

Gee you think that they might just have a bit to do with his behavior?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Let's examine the ethical and moral stance of someone who would seek this job. What if we rephrase this?

Any concentration camp guard who tries to put the brakes on shoving Jews into the gas chamber would be out of a job, and subject to Nazi court martial trial.

Personally.....I will not have teacher or principle of one our socialist K-12 schools as a friend. Good people don't willingly seek a job that forces children into a godless environment. And...Our socialist K-12 schools are **socialist**! Merely by attending children risk learning that a government that gives them tuition-free socialist schooling can also give them lots of socialist goodies.

Good teachers and principals wouldn't do that. Evil or stupid teachers and principals would.

Man, you can say that again. The people who pushed this in the military are either idiots, or intending to wreck our military. I vote for #2.

When the gays start hitting on the straight kids, and they will, there will be trouble.

You can bet your paycheck that a lot of straight soldiers will be victims of political correctness.

if McInerney didn't go to an authority figure, like girls have been taught to, then he didn't do what he should've done.

You seem to think the school knew about this alleged harassment.

Actually, I ran into a television cartoon show a couple of weeks ago that featured a gay boy who seemed like a middle schooler. It was on one of the big networks. He’s at a school dance and ended up at a microphone making a speech encouraging kids to “explore their sexuality” and encouraging them to “try it out”, even if they don’t think they’re gay. I think the show went on at 8 or 9 o’clock, Sunday night.

This is what it has come to, and at a time when the Regime is trying to enable the FCC to stifle programming like Fox news.

Yes. I do. Moreover they created the entire situation in the first place by involving themselves in a young man's mental disorder and exacerbating it:

King's mother said she pleaded with school officials to help tone down her son's increasingly flamboyant behavior. One teacher encouraged King to explore his sexuality and gave him a dress.

King's mother should sue the school big time. And then McInerney's parents should sue them too, at a minimum to pay for a good defense of the kid that they put through such emotional hell that it drove him to lash out the way he did with their PC game-playing.

I would sure like to see a case testing a parent’s right concerning a parent’s right to preclude public education from messing with their child’s sexuality. In fact IMHO, this isn’t just a civil matter, I think it’s criminal. That stupid teacher’s behavior, bouncing the child’s gay tendencies off of the rest of the class, amounted to reckless endangerment. The school officials who ignored the mother’s pleas this should be put in a dress and thrown in jail.

"Where are the men in this boy's family. Why would they let him do it? "

As I recall, the dead boy had been taken from the family at one point and sent to a camp where he was indoctrinated. The father claims that the boy was not a homo but that, after going to the camp, he used increasingly aggressive homo behavior to get attention.

The vice principal of the school is a militant lesbian, and she made enabling of the dead boy's misbehavior her pet project.

The perv kid was not in his parents’ or mother’s custody at that point. I don’t know if he was in foster care or what, but he had been removed from his mother because he was uncontrollable.
