Gingrich brings common sense to immigration debate

Finally, there is a voice of reason on immigration among the front-runners for the Republican nomination, who until last week's debate seemed to be competing with one another to see who could take the craziest stand against Hispanic immigrants.

Newt Gingrich, the front-runner of the moment as conservative Republicans seek an alternative for ideologically zigzagging second-place contender Mitt Romney, broke with the pack in the Nov. 22 CNN debate of Republican hopefuls by stating an obvious: It is realistically impossible, economically risky and ethically wrong to seek the deportation of all 11.2 million undocumented immigrants in this country.

Gingrich said that ultimately, the United States will have to find a system where, after securing the border with Mexico and launching a guest worker program to fill jobs that Americans won't take, "you need something like a World War II Selective Service Board that, frankly, reviews the people who are here."

"If you've been here 25 years and you got three kids and two grandkids, you've been paying taxes and obeying the law, you belong to a local church, I don't think we're going to separate you from your family, uproot you forcefully and kick you out," Gingrich said.

For people who have been in this country for 25 years, Gingrich offered a "red card" program that would allow them to stay in this country, but not to get citizenship. Others who arrived more recently would be deported, he said.

How can somebody be here 25 years be capable of paying taxes without the use of document fraud ? I do not call that obeying the law at all. Churches should not condone document fraud either. They always forget to pay income taxes, requires document fraud.

Yes- allowing illegal immigrants to stay. Just ignore the word “illegal” and it all makes sense!

If the illustrious Andres Oppenheimer were to suddenly discover a colony of well behaved termites quietly living in his Miami home, only chewing quietly and out of sight for 25 years, I’m sure he would be happy to let the bugs continue to share the place with him, who needs structural beams and reinforcements? What could go wrong?

It's amazing how much support Gingrich's plan is getting from liberal columnists and illegal supporters. On second thought, no it isn't.

been here 25 years, using 10 ID’s and SS #’s, on welfare the whole time, never learned english, still waving the Mexican flag at soccer games.....

That’s Newt’s target audience I guess.

There has been a mess created over the last 25 years. Republicans and Democrats share equally in having created it. There are now 11 million plus people living in the U.S. illegally.

If you want to turn back the hands of time and say it never should have happened, you are correct. But what say you know on how to correct the problem?

- First step is to seal the border so the problem does not get any worse.

- Next step is to require all that are living here illegally to register and put them through background checks. No crimes here or in Mexico and they get to stay.

- They have to pay a fee - the same as legal immigrants are required to pay plus a premium.

- They must be processed through a seperate system than the present system for legal immigrant applications.

- Legal applications get processed at a faster pace.

- At the age of 18, everyone must serve 2 years of compulsary military service (that’s everyone, not just those here illegally). There are plenty of miles of border to keep them busy. Call it desert training.

Newt says that I’m inhumane for having the gall to want the law observed.

Maybe he’s right. Perhaps I should turn over a new leaf and welcome my friends from south of the border who’ve decimated the wages in the industry I built my business in, and who’ve caused my family to take a 40% pay cut over the last half decade.

Maybe I am inhumane for wanting to see those people deported, who’ve nearly destroyed the business my wife and I sweated and bled to build for so many years.

Who am I to complain about them stealing my children’s legacy? I’m sure my American forefathers (who go all the way back to before the founding of this country) would be ashamed of me for being so cruel and greedy.

“Who’s they? You mean “we” don’t you?”

Perhaps those who have been charged with securing the borders - pro-illegal representatives and officials - represent you (and based on your posts, they probably do). But, they don't represent me or the majority of FReepers.

Anyone who has been in the USA as an illegal for 25 years has no reason to become a citizen. All that will happen is they will start getting screwed on taxes like the rest of us. They are no fools.

You left out turning off the government freebies spigot, and denying them jobs, via use of the E-Verify system.

In my view, that’s even more important than securing the border. If you shut down the magnet, they’ll stop coming all on their own. In fact, they’ll self-deport, as they’re doing in Alabama.

It’s easy to do, and it won’t cost the American tax payer a penny.
