Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality,...

May as well shut down the dept. of immigration and naturalization and put up "welcome all" neon signs with THAT coming to fruition.

After the debate, Tim Albrecht, an aide to Republican Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, tweeted that Gingrich “did himself significant harm tonight on immigration among caucus and primary voters.”

First concrete evidence I've seen that this may hurt Ginrich's candidacy. We'll find out later this week what happens to the poll numbers.

Newt Gingrich Stands by 'Soft' Immigration Stance

Yeah, he has defended his stance by saying he is for a 'path to non-deportation'.

I have found that the side engaged in such Orwellian abuse of language is the side up to no good.

He lost me when he went wobbly on illegal immigration. Now I don’t have anyone left in the GOP worth supporting, guess I’ll make pop corn and just watch. It will be fun.

“to legality, but not citizenship”

So, how does that clarification differ from his previous path to non-deportation or his legalization of the illegals?

Newt, STOP DIGGING! That hole is already deep enough to bury your candidacy.

Seems to me that he wants to create an unconstitutional citizen/non citizen hybrid that the supreme court would legalize to citizenship inside of 18 months.

Isn’t it true that most illegals do not want citizenship? Many intend to return south of the border when it is financially feasible? Their hearts are not in the USA, only their bodies.

Newt is and always will be a prostitute, not meaning to degrade prostitute’s, to the ruling elite’s.

After his idea passed congress the ACLU and the democrats would file a lawsuit in federal court and they would ALL become US citizens. GFY Newtwit

For being the “smartest” man in the race, this buffoon has no clue whatsoever. How many American workers are currently unemployed? Why do we need alien workers? Why do we want to continue subsidizing “cheap” foreign labor? Why continue burdening the taxpayers, law enforcement, courts, hospitals, schools, the welfare system, etc, with the illegal alien community?

Secure the borders.

Cut off all social benefits for illegals.

Clamp down on employers who hire illegals.

Deport illegals when caught.

Send the convicted criminals among them to prison.

The rest will leave as the freebies and opportunities dry up.

Bust up their families? Hell no! We’re not inhumane. They can take their families with them back home to Mexico.

RE :”The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate that prompted former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann to accuse him of peddling amnesty for illegal immigrants.
......Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality, but not citizenship” similar to the existing naturalization process, plus a penalty fee of at least $5,000

This sounds familiar....2007 'See you at the signing'.

Of course all their children born here get citizenship and government benefits for the poor that they (illegals) get in their (children) behalf as parents. Newt needs to talk about that aspect.

I like his plan. No one else is addressing the issue of HOW to deal with the huge number of illegals already here.

I also KNOW that the border MUST be sealed immediately for any plan to work well.

Have read Newt’s policy on illegals on his site. He never said a word about amnesty and his proposal is not amnesty. On the other hand..have never heard or read Cain’s ideas on deportation. There are major expenses involved and Newt’s honest enough to say exactly what needs to be done. Newt said NO amnesty, No citizenship ..they have to go to the back of the line, pay fines and undergo criminal background checks. On securing the border...all candidates are pretty much in accord with Paul being the exception. On deportation..I would bet most are in accord but dont have the guts to say so....on the costs of deporting...How Much Does it Cost to Deport 392,000 People?

Roughly $9.2 billion, according to figures from a March report on the per-immigrant cost of each step of the removal process. The numbers are estimates, of course, but it is still useful to illustrate the high costs behind the record number of deportations the DHS announced yesterday.

There are a number of costs involved in the removal process. First, illegal immigrants must be apprehended, which requires local law enforcement, Border Patrol and a number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement programs and offices. Next, they must be detained, and then processed through the legal system. Finally, illegal immigrants must be transported back to their native countries. Here are the per-person costs listed in the Center for American Progress report released in March:

Apprehension: $18,310
Detention: $3,355
Legal processing: $817
Transportation: $1,000

In total, that’s $23,480 for each of the 392,000 people the U.S. removed last year, or $9,204,944,000.

Of course, many of those deported were convicted criminals, meaning they would have had imposed high costs had they remained in the country. While numbers vary from state to state, on average it costs at least $60 per day (or $1,800 per month) to incarcerate prisoners.
