"They're paying these workers a lot more than they're paying their employees," Nelson said. "It's kind of sad."

Actually I think it's kind of funny and hope you and your union buddies freeze your ass off on the picket line this winter!

We’ve got near 20% unemployment and these union thugs can’t agree to anything? Yea, that makes sense.

Actually, that's utterly false, and this Nelson is either an utter idiot, or a liar to make this statement. If you want to compare costs, you have to take into account all costs incurred, or which Cooper Tire is obligated to incur; when that is done, it becomes painfully obvious that the temporary workers - for whom Cooper Tire is not obligated to provide all sorts of expensive, uneconomic benefits - are substantially cheaper than the union parasites they've just evicted.

My Masters degree was in Labor Economics and, after years of studying the labor movement, for the life of me I could never understand why someone with an ounce of self confidence would want to be in a union. By definition, a union restricts your income to that of the average worker. Kinda tough to get ahead when the entire pack moves with you.

I feel for the guy who has to be in the union to work there but just wants a paycheck. I wouldn’t piss on the average union guy if he was on fire who just wants something no one else in town has in benefits and wages - If you have a job. be blessed. Don’t gripe about it!

It’s all about the mob’s cut of the union dues.....(all of it!).

They don’t give a damn about the workers, because they know that the lockout will last long enough to offset any wage increase.
It’s always been that way.

Back around 1982, at the height of the Carter recession, my company, headquartered here in S.E. Michigan had 3 stamping plants that were not doing well. One in Gary, IN, another in Clinton, MI, and my plant in Detroit.

The company went to the three union locals involved asking for concessions explaining that we were faced with having to close either one or two plants. The Gary and Clinton plants figured the company was bluffing and wouldn't agree to any concessions. My Detroit plant did which resulted in pay cuts for everyone in my plant plus the elimination of a couple paid holidays so we survived.

The Clinton and Gary plants were closed down.........

"I'm in a state of shock," Nelson said minutes after getting official word late Monday afternoon. "I hope we can come to some kind of agreement. I am optimistic we would."

This Nelson is for you, Nelson:

If the company can bring in scab people and teach them to make quality tires so easily that they can get away with this, the jobs cannot be that tough to learn. Few special skills involved.

There are millions of unemployed people out there looking for work.

The union had better realise they are not in a good position to make demands. The public today is not in a good mood to back Union BS.

Of course they are paying temp worker more, even if they are paying minimum wage to temp workers, those workers are making more money than employee’s who are not working at all.

When the tire industry completely disappears from America, there will be FReepers who will insist that we must have tariffs on foreign tires to make American tire-making competitive. Episodes like this one will be forgotten and the “greedy” American consumer will be blamed instead.

These articles are useless unless they spell out the current salary and benefits scales and the proposed salary and benefits scales. They should also include a listing of any disputed working rules and regulations that chaffe at either management or labor.

Not when one considers the temporary workers are betting their lives that they won’t be harmed or worse by union thugs.

Nine plus percent unemployment and the Union is dicking around with the company?! Now is not the time to have a socialist hissy fit, unless Great Leader and the Federal Department of We’re-Taking-Over-Everything has agreed to come to the Union’s rescue.

This is not gonna end well.

The area has high unemployment and many people will be tempted to take the temp jobs.

Yet it is too close to Detroit and that vast reservoir of union thuggery. And Richie Trumka is just dying to turn back the clock to the old head-bustin’ days.

This is gonna get ugly.
