China builds its African empire while the 'anti-colonialist' Left looks the other way

Imagine what would happen if America barged its way into a developing country, buttered up its homicidal dictator and agreed a back-of-the-envelope deal in which he signed over his nation’s mineral wealth in return for roads, railways and sports stadiums. Everyone would benefit, no?

No. The problem is that the infrastructure turns out to be worth a hell of a lot less than the minerals. Fortunately, Washington has had the foresight to top up the dictator’s Swiss bank account. Problem solved! As for the mining operation, the Americans really don’t want to be bothered by minimum wages or trade unions. They’re banned. And no complaints from the workforce, please, because no one wants a repeat of that “misunderstanding” in which an American mine supervisor opened fire on stroppy employees.

If the United States embarked on this sort of colonial experiment, it would produce a furious “Occupy Grosvenor Square” camp outside the US embassy and a withering play by Sir David Hare at the National. But since these things are actually being done not by America but by the People’s Republic of China across the entire African continent, the “anti-colonialist” Left just yawns.

Simple. Only white people can be colonialists/racists.

Every politically aware person knows that.

I wonder what China will do if Congo or one of the others decides to nationalize all foreign invenstment industry? Or just destroy it?

Fascinating account below of a young couple’s trek across the Dem Rep of Congo. There are scarcely roads left there.

The hippies and leftists only protest when they know the target of the protests will fold and break. They knew that the Chinese are an impossible target to break, so they know well that protesting would be pointless. ONce the Chinese are established and throwing thier power around, nothing will dislodge them. A sick part of me feels a bit of schaden, since Africans will discover what REAL racism and colonialism is.

“I wonder what China will do if Congo or one of the others decides to nationalize all foreign invenstment industry? Or just destroy it?”

The Chinese will move in troops, then slaughter the leadership, and then overtly seize control of the government. Then the Chinese will openly declare the Congo as a province of China.

Much of leftism is simply opposition to Western civilization. Just for fun, ask someone concerned about the “indigenous populations” of Australia or the Americas if they are as concerned for the indigenous populations or Europe. Or whether they realize that the Spanish, not the “Anglos,” are responsible for much of the oppression of native peoples in the Western Hamisphere.

You need expeditionary warfare capability to enforce your will on a country thousands of miles away, and China is many years off that...

Africa has been a money pit for any nation or empire foolish enough to poor resources into it. So too the Chinese I say, “Best of Luck. You’re going to need it.”

the Chinese are not sending foreign aid or missionaries or do gooder types, they are sending in business and will then send in the military if their citizens are attacked. If the natives act up and start assualting and killing their citizenry, the Chinese will back them up with military might and demand land as reparations.

Striaght out of the colonial handbook and go figure, if anyone knows, it’s the CHinese.

Yeah, well, they had their chance and we should never come back. Thye have been ingrates and I bet that the remaining whites will be on better terms with the Chinese once their families are no longer being attacked with impunity. I admit the sinner in me looks forward to the natives getting a halthy dose of reality.

China takes a very long term view of things, which is one of the scary things about them, and they are putting themselves in a position to have access to natural and agricultural resources over the long haul. People focus on China getting into a military conflict with us, while ignoring the growing economic conflict. China is working to undermine our aerospace and military industries, and God help us, they would love to undermine our agricultural industry as well.

hippies etc. will protest against what they know and if they are given information about it. There are voices of conscience in China too, but they get executed.

there are protests for Free Tibet in the US etc. but they come to no avail as the Chinese govt doesn't care -- different tactics for different groups - for example, the Gandhian policy of non-violence as used by MLK too worked when practised against an opponent who cared about his public's opinion

it would not work against a dictator or a tyrannical regime

And talking of India -- sinsof is correct that China cannot yet project its power across oceans -- also india would not allow that

I think they would orchestrate a military coup, then they can stay in the background looking all innocent.
