~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

No progress on the chair hunt as yet. Still driving to work - As long as I'm dependent on the walker I don't see the train as an option. With any luck, I'll be able to start taking the train again in January.

You are colder than we are.

How much snow?

We broke a rain record yesterday. Most rain in a single year since they have been measuring.

We don't have a YMCA anywhere close - we have a public indoor pool about five miles from my house - that's where I would probably go.

I was at my aunt’s house for Sunday dinner in MA when we got the news and the adults were all talking about war.

My cousin and I,both 9 years old, were afraid that Christmas would be cancelled. Kids !!!!!!

My son’s in-laws were kids in Honolulu that day. It was quite frightening for them.

Looking around town for the past couple days, there aren't any events going on. Just another sign of the times, I guess.

Are your roads clear yet?

My family was visiting friends in MA that same Sunday, too. I was 10. I remember everyone asking “Where is Pearl Harbor?” We soon learned!

And it began.....Pearl Harbor bombing.....

“At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, launching of the first wave of a two-wave attack.

Beginning at 0600 hours ....the first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers... which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa.

The second strike, launched at 0715 hours,... consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets.

At 0753 hours... the first wave consisting of.... 40 Nakajima B5N2 “Kate” torpedo bombers,... 51 Aichi D3A1 “Val” dive bombers,.... 50 high altitude bombers.... and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor.

Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.”

Kathy,.... Thank you for this thread....

And a Prayer,

Lord ..may we always be grateful for our country and the many who layed down their life that we might remain a free nation......And as we remember this day may we also be mindful that catastrophe can happen suddenly....keep our nation alert Lord...and eyes to see and hear when the enemy of freedom seeks to destroy.

In Jesus name...Amen

It is still really windy, so the main roads are clear and dry. You have to be careful on the edges not to get caught by ice. The worst part is with the snow all gone it is SO DARK!

Sunrise....9:54am
Sunset.....3:47pm

That is amazing in a year when we had a record LOW amount of
rain...about 4 inches in 14 months.

I think we got about 3-4 inches. A lot of it is still around...
it’s been too cold for it to melt. Tomorrow it will...high
in the 40s.

Up and down...no wonder we’re all sick. :)
