Why we should consider a per-mile road tax

(CNN) -- Based on recent history and what's likely to happen to the nation's infrastructure, it's an inescapable conclusion: We will need new and different sources of funding if we are to have the type of transportation system that is needed to support economic prosperity.

For the past 75 years, the U.S. road network has provided the foundation for much of the nation's economic development. This network has not come without a cost; estimates are that the replacement value of the nation's roads is $1.3 trillion.

Hmmmm, silly me, but methinks that we’re already taxed per mile when we burn gas. An added “bonus” (to low IQ government slimes, at least) is that the more gas one burns per mile, the more tax is paid.

What part of this does CNN and the dim-bulb-crats not understand?

I neglected to mention above that I believe that there was an added gasoline tax (in the 60s if memory is correct) that we were told was specifically for road maintenance.

Per mile road tax? BS. Its another self licking ice-cream cone bureaucracy waiting to happen, basically taxing to support the tracking infrastructure required to make it work while invading your privacy as big brother tracks your movement.

Great idea.....pay to make the road and keep it paved and then pay per mile to use it. Next up? Tax the Air, there's only so much to go around!

The fuel tax revenue stream will decline because of increasing motor vehicle fuel efficiency and the growing number of hybrid and electric vehicles on the road.

Government-imposed CAFE standards and subsidized hybrids & electrics combine to create a "problem" that can be solved with new taxes and more government intrusion.

I already pay a per mile tax, its called federal and states gasoline tax.

There are three costs:

Space cost at times of congestion, road damage from use and other maintenance costs (e.g. snow/ice removal).

The first is a time issue, the second a weight/suspension dynamics issue, and only the third a flat rate per/mile use cost.

A proper allocation of the costs is tough to do.

Possibly if they take out the gas taxes at the pump, but that would never happen.

Yeah, and in addition, they want to get into the actual mechanix of “monitoring” those miles.....and at the same time every other little thing you do/don’t do no matter how slight!!!!!
