WASHINGTON -- Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that he would offer controversial former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton the position of secretary of state if he wins the presidency.
Gingrich earned cheers for the choice at a forum hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition, at which nearly all the GOP presidential aspirants appeared separately. Bolton served as President George W. Bush's ambassador to the U.N. for more than a year but never won Senate confirmation.
Critics described him as hotheaded, and he famously loathed the U.N., which won him conservative fans. Bolton discussed a 2012 presidential run himself but decided against it.
Gingrich's assertion -- If he will accept it, I will ask John Bolton to be secretary of state -- could run afoul of federal law, which bans a candidate from pledging an appointment for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy. Gingrichs campaign did not respond to a request for comment on the matter.
Foreign policy and pro-Israel sentiment were the dominant themes at Wednesday's forum, as the candidates gave speeches and took questions from an audience that ponied up at least $500 per ticket for the privilege.
Gingrich, the former U.S. House speaker from Georgia, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were the top draws for the event, as they have emerged as the chief contenders for the GOP nomination. Romney has been steady throughout the race, while Gingrich has surged in the polls in the past few weeks.
Gingrich's fast-rising campaign also has earned the backing of Coweta County U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, who plans to formally endorse as soon as Thursday, an aide with knowledge of the endorsement told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Westmoreland will be the fifth member of the Georgia congressional delegation to formally back Gingrich,

“Hot-headed”? Good, that would be a welcome change.
This alone is worth the ride. Bolton is the perfect choice for State. He’s a tough no-nonsense America first guy. He has no patience for the mealy-mouthed diplomats that normally infest the State Department.
Go Newt!! Bolton is the man!!
That’s what we NEED in a Sec’y of State! Bolton down at Foggy Bottom is a given no matter WHO the nominee is, IMHO. And we DON’T need Newt. Bachmann, possibly Santorum...PLEASE not a Newt or a Mitt.
It is beyond dispute that Bolton causes hot heads. Their heads literally explode! :)
>> Critics described him as hotheaded, and he famously loathed the U.N.
They say that like it’s a *bad* thing.
Every American loathes the U.N. including New Yorkers (with the exception of the idiot Bostonian Bloomberg).
What’s the opposite of hot headed. Frozen brain.
The trouble with libs (well, one of the troubles with libs) is that they get hot headed about things that don’t mean much, whilst Bolton is smart enough to know what to get hot headed about.
Screw the critics. We’ve seen what a massive fail their ideas turn out to be.
I was abivolent about Gingrich, but his choice of Bolton makes me like him a bit more.
I hope the Ambassador enjoys recess appointments because there are still too many Senate Pubbies who won’t vote to confirm him.
Gingrich's assertion -- If he will accept it, I will ask John Bolton to be secretary of state -- could run afoul of federal law, which bans a candidate from pledging an appointment for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy.Only the Atlanta Urinal Constipation could interpret this as Gingrich "pledging an appointment for support." How about because Bolton is the guy I and many other pro-American Republicans would choose? How about because Bolton is first among the possible names. How about because Bolton is the anti-Brzesinski, anti-Rice (both Susan and Condi) best possible choice for the job?

It's all good!
THAT move would secure my vote. I love John Bolton.
Bolton is no “hothead”. Regardless, in the pursuit of liberty I would far prefer a hothead to a softhead.
There’s a whole movement that calls Bolton hot-headed.
It includes...
The Left in the United States
The United Nations
The E. U.
China
Russia
Iran
Syria
Lebanon
A.N.S.W.E.R.
S. E. I. U.
Hezbollah
Hamas
Al Axsa (Sp?) Brigade
Islam
Terrorists
The Palestinians
The Muslim Brotherhood
A better endorsement I’ve seldom seen...
Good choice.
