Hey, fellow FReepers. I've seen threads like this over the years but darned if I can seem to find or access any of them, soooooooo.....
I'm looking for advice on a handgun purchase. The gun will be a Christmas present for my lady friend who happens to be a professional armed security officer (and supervisor, trainer, etc.,etc.). She currently owns a Glock .40 cal semi-auto (her work weapon) and a pretty sweet S&W .38 revolver. She's a CCW permit holder; well-trained.
Since there are SO many FReepers here with scads of experience in such things, I'm looking for some suggestions for a handgun for this lady.
She is about 5'6" tall, not frail, VERY long fingers so she can handle a good sized weapon. For example, her Glock is a bear for me to shoot since I have stubby little fingers, but fits her hand perfectly.
I want something with stopping power. I'll say up front that I have to decide on whether or not to get a hand-cannon for her or something much more fitting for concealed carry, so very open to your suggestions on both.
I note here that she is allowed to carry any personal weapon on her for her job. If she had a .44 magnum, she could carry it on the job.

If I were buying a gift firearm for a professional I’d give them a gift certificate. But if you really, really insist on putting something under the tree, think about a Ruger LCP. It’s very small and cute and great for concealed carry, but a lot of LEOs like it for personal use.
The classic third point on the triangulation with an S&W revolver and combat tupperware is:

Colt, S&W, and Ruger make good basic ones. The sky’s the limit on upper end ones, semi-customs, and customs.
A Ruger GP-100 .357 Magnum in SS and a 4” barrel.
Magazines for the Glock. You can never have too many magazines.

Take her to a gun show...Make it clear to her you want to buy her a handgun as a present...
You’ll find every possible handgun available there...Let her “try on” every handgun there, and make up her own mind...
Like a pair of shoes, she won’t necessarily like or want what you might choose, and that’s OK...A personal weapon is by definition, a personal choice...
Then up front, or (discreetly) give her the money to buy it and let her complete the paperwork and background check, and make the purchase; or reimburse her for the cost later on so as to avoid any possible appearance of a “straw purchase”...
And one other suggestion...How about a gift certificate for some firearms training if she is not already well trained?...Or a case of ammo in her caliber so she can practice?

Needs gift. Has a semi-auto. Has 38 (revolver I assume). Either .357 or Taurus Judge. Don’t forget the ammo, a few thousand at least. Don’t rule out extra mags for the .40.

But as far as the original poster is concerned, he’s talking about buying a firearm for his SO. Yes, I appreciate that one could spend $600-$900 on ammo, but that amount of $$ on a gift cert is a little more eye-opening than yer standard gift certificate, I’d say.
Make sure the handgun is unloaded before you wrap it.
I will say EXCELLENT choice....because that is the first and only handgun that I personally own. :) It's a freakin' hand cannon; just love it.
Since she has access to mine already, I'll find her something else....but your taste is impeccable. :)

I agree but you can always suggest something that YOU think is good.
Personally I’d get a ruger LCR as it can fire +P, very lightweight, very concealable, and the handgrip REALLY takes recoil very well, your hand doesn’t wear out.
Great suggestions from you.....but remember; she is already very highly trained (a TRUE professional armed security officer/supervisor/trainer; not some dimwit “rent-a-cop”).
She also has a CCW, so she can buy any and as many handguns/rifles as she wants under NC law. No background checks.
You cannot go wrong with a big Ruger revolver as they are solid, reliable powerful weapons

The two .357s shoot amazingly well. My GP100 is my .357 workhorse. The .480 Ruger calibered Super Redhawks are serious weapons which are totally devastating. The factory Hornady ammo is loaded close to its .475 Linebaugh cousin with massive blast and recoil effects that will shock you.
Consider the Ruger LC-9 with a laser a great pocket or purse CCW.
