I always like to remind people of the 2000 Mark Steyn column. Being rightly skeptical of debate analysis and polls on who won the Bush-Gore debate, he decided to call random Americans.

Inevitably the conversation went like this:

STEYN: Who won the debate?
RANDOM CITIZEN: Gore
STEYN: Who are you going to vote for?
RANDOM CITIZEN: Bush

As Common Tator often said, debates are about who is the most likable candidate. In other words, when an Oval Office speech is necessary, who would you most like seeing behind that desk on your TV?

People need to think about this when they judge debate performance.

Hah, Mark Steyn has a way about him, doesn’t he?

That is so true. The likeable factor is underrated by the debate observers.

I was on the debate thread last night and a few minds were changed, I think, but not too many.

The way one feels about a candidate and how much one likes him/her really has an impact on how one views the responses.

I thought Perry did the best he’d ever done and his likeability factor came through big time. He’s definitely relaxing and being himself now.

Loved the way he deflected Diane’s attempt to get him to hit Newt into hitting Obama, our true target.

I also feel that we are becoming a little more pragmatic as Bray suggested earlier and realizing that we have to support our candidate.

If Newt goes on to win, I will try to love him with all my heart and some (very little because I have very little) of my money.

But until then, I support a better man.

So Lindsay Graham has obviously read my comment as he waited to come on to MTP.

He DID, God Bless, bring up the question...HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT??? as I suggested.

Lindsay...YOU NEED TO NAME THE PERCENTAGE!!!

So you said...”How much do you want, Mr. President?” That’s a start. But continue on...”Do you want 60%? Maybe 75%?”

They need to keep throwing out those percentages....they should maybe even suggest...hey...you want ONE HUNDRED PERCENT? What PERCENTAGE above their current 53% absconded by the federal gubmint (I might be wrong on that number but I know it’s high) do you want?

Us boobs, we understand that percent. If the elected pubs REALLY want to hammer it home, suggest that once you go after 75% of the pay of the millionaires and billionaires, how soon do you raise of the fed taxes on the middle class?

SAY IT FOR GOD’S SAKE!

I see you can't be bothered to ping me when you trash me.

Hardly a surprise.

Here's a hint - it ain't my fault Perry couldn't be bothered to take a few minutes to be prepared to align his response on the eight justice comment with what his campaign was stating.

And it is hardly the first time Perry has been unprepared. All of your lame spin and attacks on me will not change that fact - and it is fact, as reflected in Perry's continuing weak polling.

And for all of your trashing of Newt, he IS prepared for debates and interviews. Try getting Perry to emulate that instead of trashing those who point out that Perry isn't doing his homework.

or anybody who is interested.

A lot of people mention the courtesy of pinging a person when one discusses him or her.

Probably a nice thing to do, but how can one do it after vowing never to respond to that person again?

It’s a quandary.

But in my defense, I didn’t trash dirtboy and I didn’t trash Newt.

And I’ll bet you $10,000 you can’t prove that I did.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH

I ask the same question when confronted with the admonition to " Welcome the stranger (illegal alien)".

okay, I’m getting the server message thing again.

AB, I really think you should consider approaching somebody about this problem. Obviously SOMETHING is being done on Sunday mornings to cause this to happen. It’s driving down hits on this, my favorite FREEP thread of all.

Just keep hitting refresh and give generously during the next Freepathon.

Don’t see Newt in all that...

True. For some reason Gingrich has decided to boycott the Sunday circuit - at least for now. I’m not sure what’s up with that. Anybody know why?

Well, if you no longer respected someone, and did not care for their opinion, why would you ping them anyway?

I too am getting the same message and it is a real pain. Maybe it’s just those of us in the swamps of Delaware. No one else has mentioned it.

why does this happen on Sunday when we’re trying to talk.

Last nite’s debate thread was huge and it was fast as lightning.

Yeah, altura, this is not trashing in your book:

Dirtboy cannot seem to control his disappointment that so many people thought Perry won the debate over the silver-tongued dude.

That's my problem with you - you are a phony and a fraud. You are impugning my motives when I am not even talking about the debate last night, I am talking about what Perry said on FNS this morning. And you get in a shot at Newt as well. But you're not trashing anyone, you are Little Miss Innocent.

You say people should take the high road - while you take the low road while pretending otherwise.

I'd have more respect for you if you just admitted you are playing your own brand of hardball. But you don't. So I have no respect for your antics. And those antics are hardly a good reflection on Perry's campaign.

Perry needs to be more prepared. POTUS is the most full-time job on the planet, and running for it is a close second. Perry can't even be bothered to do sufficient prep for a fairly short interview by Wallace. Newt last night was prepared for everyone to be aiming for him and held his own. Perry got in his own good points, bully for him. And then he turned around and this morning undid the groundwork BY HIS OWN CAMPAIGN to defuse the eight justice comment.

Perry is making unforced errors. And you want to convince us he is ready to take on the far bigger attack machine that awaits the eventual GOP nomineee? Pretty tough sell, and that is reflected in Perry's polling numbers.

Oh, I still like dirtboy. He’s just got a bug up his butt about Perry and he’s afraid Perry beat his guy in the debate.

I’ll respond to him again, of course, just not on this thread.

To: Recovering Ex-hippie

Thanks Ex-hippie/all glad you like them.

We went out yesterday with the candidate who showed up at our door knocking event. He had fun and couldn’t believe our system and how effective it is. It was freezing cold and we had 10 people knocking doors and planted around 20 of his signs while he visited with people at their doors.

We are calling it Occupy the Porches and have developed an entire campaign program. If anybody wants a copy of the brochure email me and I will get it to you. It is a lot of work but does win elections. We have the Dems terrified for the first time in 40 yrs.

Pray for America

Right now, the dims have us focused on infighting among our candidates.

But as soon as we select someone, Obama will see there will be hell to pay.

Because I think 99% of us will get behind whoever we select and concentrate on the evil dude in the White House.

“why does this happen on Sunday when we’re trying to talk.”

It has happened to me at other times, but Sunday is by far the worst day and espcially during this thread. I had to refresh at least 20 times just to get to the reply screen. What a pain. Wonder if I can get some money from Uncle Sugar for repairs?

For the the first time in many weeks/months, I actually saw parts of 3 shows on the same morning.

NOBODY is talking about a Republican convention where the candidate is not already determined. The possibility of a convention in August where something of actual importance needs to be decided is exciting; maybe we could push the election campaign back to when most normal people actually care about it, instead of making it last longer than the NBA playoffs.

And if we had an open Republican convention without a candidate coming in, I'll bet the candidate would be somebody who has not been in the current round of NBA playoff-debates we are going through now.

I'm really disappointed that no other women accused Herman Cain this week of acting like a Clinton or a Kennedy; sounds like the market value of a potential settlement or book deal may have dropped.

So once again, he was not prepared for an interview or debate. He had an effective defense for his eight justices comment that his campaign had prepared, he had to know he would be asked about it, yet he stumbled and reinforced the notion that he is a bumbler instead.

I prefer an unrehearsed, honest admission over a nice-sounding, handler-prepared lie any day. I am by no means totally sold on Perry, but my respect for him just went up a little bit.
