Rebel Chinese villagers demand elections, test Communist Party authority

Published: 10:21AM Monday December 19, 2011

Protesting Chinese villagers today demanded that central leaders defuse grievances about what they called crooked land deals and a suspicious death, as a revolt that has tested Communist Party authority in this semi-rural area neared its second week.

Residents of Wukan Village in Guangdong province have driven off officials, erected makeshift barricades to deter police, and held protest gatherings and marches daily after the death in custody last weekend of Xue Jinbo, one of the organisers of a months-long campaign over former farmland that residents say was illegally seized for commercial development.

Wukan is in Hailufeng area where the first Soviet of China was established in 1927. History comes in full circle, full in irony.

From Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hailufeng_Soviet

The Hailufeng Soviet (i.e. Hai[feng]-Lufeng Soviet) was the first Chinese Soviet territory, established in November 1927, by Peng Pai with Ye Ting's remnant troops from the Nanchang Uprising. After the arduous August–September Little Long March and the near-rout at the Battle of Shantou these troops were much diminished and were directed by the ComIntern to lie low in the deep countryside and to avoid any further battles.[1]

The Chinese communists tested their first atom bomb in 1966. They developed and tested their first thermonuclear weapon in 1967.

That is gutsy. I hope they don’t get squashed like bugs. I wish them the best though in their desire for freedom and justice. It’s a tough road for everyone who seeks it.

The Chinese government will be ruthless in squashing this once they get foreign reporters out of there.

Lessons must be taught.

I hope they don’t get squashed like bugs.

This is not Libya or Syria, the Chinese are communists, they have a philosophical justification for maintaining their power, so they are not even as restrained as the most brutal of Arab dictators.

...grievances about what they called crooked land deals and a suspicious death...
Damn those counter-revolutionaries and how they force the central authority to execute them!

“It’s a tough road for everyone who seeks it.”

The flip side is, having found it and enjoyed it for a long time, forgetting that it must be diligently kept...or lost.

Curious as to how the lockstep supporters of Free Trade with Communist China are going to spin this one.

Attaining freedom and liberty isn’t really something that is completed like winning a race. The attainment of it is something that must be constantly maintained like spinning plates on a pole. Maintaining it is a much easier process than getting it going in the first place but it is still work and it never ends.
