Report: Top Syrian General Deserts
Arutz Sheva ^ | 22/12/11 | David Lev

Opposition sources in Syria said Thursday that a top Syrian army general, Mustapha a-Sheikh, has abandoned his post. A-Sheikh is in charge of chemical weapons deployment in eastern Syria. According to the sources, a-Sheikh escaped over the border into Turkey in recent days.

A-Sheikh's defection came on the background of what opposition activists said was an increasing frustration among many army soldiers at being deployed to fight against Syrian citizens. Weeks ago, soldiers were subjected to intense propaganda stressing that the protests were being organized by groups seeking to plunge Syria into anarchy, who were funded by “foreign governments,” but with the daily increasing bloodshed and the growing protests, many soldiers have come to the conclusion that the uprising in Syria is indeed a legitimate expression of protest by Syrians. The sources said that more defections were likely to follow in the coming days. Meanwhile, IDF sources told Army Radio Thursday the increasing instability in Syria is of great concern to Israeli security officials. In recent days Syria has conducted military exercises using its most advanced equipment, and Israeli officials fear there is a strong likelihood that those weapons will find their way to Hizbullah, either before or after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad falls. Among the weapons Syria displayed in its exercises Wednesday were the Russian-made P-800 supersonic Yakhont anti-ship missile. “Our guiding principle is that when there is instability in Syria, with or without Assad, the likelihood of a real conflict in the region is ever greater. That is why we are taking these exercises seriously,” the sources said.

"Assad was a tyrant, not an ideologue."

He may not be an ideologue, but he partners with Iran. Through Syria is how Iran is able to maintain and support Hezbollah. How can it be any worse? He does Iran's bidding and he's an active enemy of America.

"I have a feeling this guy will end up dead soon."

Heart attack or some other natural ailment of course...

re: Yup...Bunch of big rigs high tailing it out of Iraq pre-invasion. If memory serves, we bombed some russians that were along one of those convoys.

They make dessert out of their generals? Makes that bad efficiency report seem like not such a big thing.

Obviously he was being asked to deploy his charge and he had reservations.

Iran is doing everything it can to keep Assad in power, so I’m for the insurrection.

Among the weapons Syria displayed in its exercises Wednesday were the Russian-made P-800 supersonic Yakhont anti-ship missile

IMO regional war will start when these missiles are used to attack shipping coming into the port of Haifa. The ROP will say they will stop blockading Israel when the Gaza blockade stops. Anti-ship missiles will be launched from civilian areas, hospitals/schools/mosques, and there will be screams of horror when Israel strikes them.

War is coming. Depend on Zero making a mess of the whole thing.

Let the Turks have the place—They could run it better. The new agreement with Israel might be to make sure there are no mistakes when The Turks bomb Damascus. Anything that destabilizes Syria is a good thing.

Turkey could become the counter-weight against Iran that Iraq was.

All of Sadam’s weaponry was guided into the Bekaa valley by US SOG operatives.

I guess when Syria falls, the alquida types get Saddam’s weapons of mass production, chemical weapons that they have been hiding since he shipped them over there.

I'd bet they've already been happening and we just aren't hearing about it. Bashar isn't going to want to advertise the fact.

Chocolate-covered camels’ balls.

Oops. Sorry. That should have been “chocolate-covered caramel balls”.

If a Syrian general defects over the situation in his country, is he in DeNial or just heading for it?

Or as Moses’ mother said when hiding him from the Egyptians, “No use beating around the Bush”.

WHen George Bush Jr, won the presidential election a second time, he said”, Holy Moses, how did that happen?”

What a lovely historical connection Bush had to Moses and vice-versa.

when the Islamists grab power in the chaos, Syria will become much, much more dangerous.

Oh yeah...and good bye Damascus when all is said and done. And of course the Shities in Iraq are clamping down now on the Sunni's.....it's going to get allot more dangerous in the ME as these Islamic nations will jockey for power...regardless of what the rest of the nation leaders want to see happen.

American politicians STILL do not understand the mindset of the ME....and they won't anytime in the near future.
