KC police decline to reduce parade costs for Occupy group

If members of Occupy Kansas City want to march in the streets next week, they’ll need to pay a $4,100 fee for police protection, police commissioners announced Friday.

****snip****

Members of the movement have camped peacefully for months in a city park south of the Liberty Memorial. At a meeting earlier this month, a lawyer representing the group asked the police to waive the cost of having officers shut down traffic near Ninth and Main streets.

The lawyer, Gina Chiala, said the march would be called “The death of the social safety net,” would involve about 100 people and would be a symbolic funeral to bring attention to the group’s issues.

****snip****

“This important form of protest should not be reserved for wealthy organizations alone,” Chiala wrote. “We hope you will work with us so that all voices can be heard.”

Since when did they start “naming” marches? If you have to name a march, you’re doing something wrong somewhere.

Of course they would want if for free. I wonder if the lawyer is working for free.

Can anyone identify Gina Chiala, esp. any radical legal groups she belongs to ranging from the ACLU, to the two communist legal groups, National Lawyers Guild and the Center for Constitutional Rights?

you can use the Private Reply site if you want.

Thanks.

Doofer, the $4,100 fee was for traffic cops to close down the streets, if OccupyKC had just marched on the sidewalks, there would have been no cost. This solution was suggested at the Police Board meeting, but was discarded by OKC because it wouldn’t have the same “impact” as walking in the street.
