UPDATE (12.53am): Sources at RPV are telling me that the 2,000 signatures do not have addresses on them meaning that they cannot be verified. Newt Gingrich may very well be off the ticket in Virginia, folks
Rumor has it this evening that one of the petition gatherers was not qualified to circulate petitions which technically disqualifies those signatures in Virginia.
This would mean that the only two campaigns that qualified in the Virginia primary will be Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.
However and theres always a however former State Senator Marty Williams back in 2007 was accused of having a handler circulate petitions to get him on the ballot that was not legally able to do so. The court ruled that, though the petitioner was not legally entitled to circulate the petitions, the enfranchisement of those who did sign the petitions trumped the lack of qualifications the petition gatherer held.
Ergo, even if this report is right, Gingrich will have the names needed to qualify for the Virginia ballot.
If
these reports are true
Can Newt challenge this? But such a thing would cost time, money and energy that needs to be spent on the campaign itself. A write-in campaign might help, but if Newt loses Virginia, all the more ammunition from the establishment and dems. Newt is my candidate, but I have to say this is just inexcusable. Wasn’t there another state that they were saying a few weeks ago that Newt might not qualify to get on the ballot? Someplace like Wisconsin? I could swear I remember seeing something. The only thing that would make this whole thing funny is if it turned out that Mitt also failed to qualify. Now that would be hilarious if it was only Ron Paul.
I agree. 2000 out of 10000 is 20%. I can see maybe 100 signatures being questionable, but 20%? Something stinks is right.
I am a conservative, Southern Baptist.
I have NO PROBLEM voting for a Mormon.
I have a huge problem voting for a RINO.
That said, I guess I will hold my nose and vote Romney if he is the candidate.
Hey, what else can we do? Like I would EVER vote for Obama.
NEVER.
Or EXTREME incompetence.
You missed the news that TX was moved back to April 3.
So Super Tuesday is now MA, VT, VA, OH, GA, TN, OK, ND, ID, AK.
Romney should win VT, MA, VA. Someone else should win GA, TN, OK. OH I’m not sure about. The 3 caucus states of ND, ID, and AK could be up in the air althouh Romney won all 3 in 2008. ID is heavily mormon so he should be ok there.
And this is after February where Romney is poised to do extremely well. NV, MN, CO, ME, MI, AZ are all favorable towards him. As well as the caucus in WA on March 3 right before Super Tuesday. So he could well build up a huge cushion against some setbacks on Mar 6.
Will anyone care if Newt wins GA? TN and OK are farily small delegate wise.
The calendar is looking pretty good for Romney right about now.
"Never assume conspiracy when ineptitude will do".
Making excuses for Newt you are. His signature gathering effort was a confused and dilatory, using paid shills at shopping malls and supermarkets. The successful efforts were conducted by volunteers outside polling places, which garners actual registered voters.
Newt's executive incompetence is on full display. If he can't muster the ability to get on his home State ballot he is hardly GOP nominee material.
You GET a security clearance de facto by being elected to Congress. etc
Who is doing the counting - mitt’s behind the scenes crew?
HE IS DESPERATE and so is Barry.
Good post! I agree and want him more than ever - screw the MSM, ‘rats and rinos. Fighting FOR America is not easy and I’m thankful he’s doing it for us.
I believe that we are on the verge of a huge Romney sweep of the whole party.
If I were to guess, managerial skills of the current crop of candidates are deteriorating. Modern politics is largely done by personal contacts, phone calls, backroom deals. This particular test, however, is pure management and your own skills - like the old "trial by combat." You are being tested by the real world, and no phone call can help you.
I'm sure if I wanted I could have collected 11,000 signatures for myself. I'd have it planned, of course, and the deadline wouldn't be a complete surprise to me. Anyone who ever had to run a business a notch above a lemonade stand has to know how to plan things. That's a dying skill in this America.
Couldn't find one yet. Will this do?
