Dubuque, Iowa - Continuing to contrast himself against Mitt Romney, the "Massachusetts moderate," Newt Gingrich declared he would grow the economy as president by reining in the government the way he had done with Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp.
"In 1982, Reagan was talked into a tax increase, I opposed it. Kemp and I led the fight against it. Reagan said it was a mistake; it was the biggest single mistake of his administration. In 1990, President Bush wanted to raise taxes and I opposed it. We had a huge fight. The majority of Republicans voted no. And this fight still goes on today."
Gingrich said he had experienced this standoff twice already and had the experience to win the current standoff between tax cutters and tax hikers, putting the front-runner Mitt Romney in the latter category.
"He's a fine person, I've said that publicly," Gingrich said of the national front-runner whose negative ads have undercut the former House Speaker's position in the polls. "He is a good manager, he is a competent. He did very, very well with the Winter Olympics but there's a huge difference between the philosophy of a supply side conservative in the Kemp-Reagan tradition, and the philosophy of a Massachusetts moderate. I would dramatically cut taxes."
The former House Speaker has been criticized for taking credit for the achievements of former President Bill Clinton and Gingrich said he "gets to claim half the credit" for the "bipartisan effort."
"I was effective. I actually got the deal done," Gingrich said. "So it wasn't 112% pure. But it worked. And we got a liberal Democrat to sign welfare reform, we got a liberal Democrat to sign tax cuts, we got a liberal Democrat to sign four consecutive balance budgets. Now I think that's pretty effective conservatism."

Thanks for this thread.
HEY! YEAH YOU, Nanny State Newt! Let me give you a quick reality check!
President Reagan rescued the US Economy by encouraging private business to grow the economy.
The economy grew, but the increase in predatory taxation and micromanagement regulation by the US Federal Government, grew much faster. Hence, it is no longer possible to grow the economy.
Thus today, it is not possible to grow the economy at a rate greater than 3 % per year, despite the best efforts of the Federal Reserve.
It is all well and good to repeal this taxation, or repeal that regulation, but those necessary actions do not resolve the question Is Washington the problem?
The entirety of Washington must be uniformly reduced. Rather than debating winners and losers, everyone who receives Federal money gets the same Pay Haircut.
Getting backing by Laffer is HUGE. If Newt is able to grab that AND Freepers, that would be tough to beat.
Stellar remarks, Jim!
GO GINGRICH!
Reagan made several mistakes. And he was genuinely sorry for each and every one. Gingrich has made several mistakes. And he’s admitted to them and asked forgiveness. And I believe he means it.
I’ve never seen Romney admit to any of his many mistakes, never apologized, never asked the forgiveness of his constituents, or his fellow citizens whom he severely damaged, or his prospective voting base to whom he lies daily. Not even for the thousands of babies that were murdered on his “abortion should be safe and legal because Roe v Wade is settled law” watch and are still being murdered daily due to his socialist RomneyCare program and for which we taxpayers are now footing the bill. All we get is him praising his past performance and saying that ALL of his past positions, quite frankly, have been “conservative” positions, including RomneyCare. This man is a liar. An evil liar
Any man who can say the things Romney said on these clips ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7OQoBxZZPqU ) is evil.
Even if he fell down on his knees and begged for forgiveness on national TV, I could never trust him because he’s an accomplished evil liar. God may forgive him if he repents and asks for redemption, but I’ll never trust him.
And no way in hell will I ever vote for him. Don’t care if that ultimately drives me into bankruptcy. I’ll be going out the same way I came in... naked and penniless.
We're not all famous enough to meet with guys like that, but you represent a whole lot of diverse (fractious, pain-in-the-ass) conservatives. ;)
If he wants this vote, he may not be able to reach me (actually, I don't want his security detail here), but he can reach you.
And I do trust you. Eventually, sometimes..

Don’t get me wrong. I agree. If it’s Newt or Mittens I’d take the sub zero snow storm crawling over broken glass in a pair of shorts to vote for Newt... (uphill of course)
Mittens you could carry me to the car in 70 degree sunny weather and carry me in to the voting booth and I still won’t vote for him.
Newt’s our best (only) shot. I understand that. I’m close to bankrupt now so if it’s Romney or Zero lets sink this thing and get it over with. At least then the blame would fall squarely on the party it belongs on.

Great summary on the Newtster JR! You silver tongued devil!
That’s why Newt wants to drastically cut the government, cut the bureaucracy, cut the regulations and cut the taxes. Privatize social security and medicare, rein in the federal reserve, fire the EPA, fire the czars, repeal ObamaCare, repeal Dodd-Frank, repeal Sarbanes-Oxley, dismantle the Marxist nanny state, and return all entitlement and welfare programs to the states and the people. And reign in the activist judiciary, restore the balance of powers between the co-equal branches of government and restore sovereignty to the states and the people, ie, restore our constitutionally limited government and our liberty!
I’ll be sure to shave the morning we meet in case he swoons and wants to kiss me on the cheek.
JFK talked boldly about reigning in the Federal Reserve.
I have no faith in him governing like a conservative.

LOLOLOLOL.
Sure thing, Jim.
I have a picture with Newt, does that count? Syncro might also, but I know fer sure that Syncro has his autograph on the brim of a hat!
I should add that on the same night Syncro got Newt’s autograph and I had the pic taken with him, I also came away with a kiss on my right cheek from Rick Perry, but it wasn’t good enough to make me throw my support to him...LOL.

So I'm going to go with that loud inner voice. And hope I never know the rest of that story.
I'm out. 73s. SK

Nope, didn’t get a picture with Newt.
But not only did I get his signature, but his wife’s also.
She was thrilled to be asked, you know the wives don’t get much attention.
I put away the black marker, and gave her a special one in the color of red.
She liked that gesture, made her feel special I think.
Really, I think onyx has the best idea.
Get a kiss from that hot blonde that hangs around with him...
Hiya Syncro!
That was a fabulous night! Loved the receiving line and all the excitement!
Callista was signing autographs in the receiving line too, but I didn’t ask for any autographs. Dumb, unprepared me.
