Wake deputy kills dog while searching for runaway teen (another 'isolated incident')
WRAL (Raleigh-Durham) ^ | December 29, 2011 | Beau Minnick

A Wake County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a couple’s 3-year-old dog Wednesday night while searching for a runaway teenager.

John and Linda Super say two deputies came to their home on King Circle, looking for a 15-year-old neighbor who had run away and had often spent time with them.

One of the couple’s dogs, Elvis, forced his way out the front door and ran outside as the couple talked to the deputies, they said. One of the deputies shot Elvis twice, including once in the back of the head, killing him, according to the Supers.

“All we’ve got is a dead dog and a lot of questions that need answers,” Linda Super said. “(Elvis) came running out, never bothered a soul, never opened his mouth, never woofed or nothing when he came out the door.”

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the deputy, Roderick Belfield, said the dog was barking and running towards him. Belfield will not be punished for shooting the dog.

--SNIP--

Harrison said he is investigating whether Belfield or the other deputy, Kenneth Edward Kay, used profanity while subduing John Super, who was upset after the shooting. John Super says the deputies were rough with him.

One of the runaway teen's guardians said Elvis was "vicious" and had lunged for the deputy, something the Supers dispute

“(Elvis) was my fourth child,” Linda Super said. “He was like the center of our lives.”

Usual newspaper title would read:

Police killed Elvis.

He was like the center of our lives.

Perhaps they need to be re-centered.

>>Belfield will not be punished for shooting the dog.

Why would he be punished for shooting a dog? Cops can gun down unarmed people and they aren’t even punished.

Whoa...you're paying your taxes, not bothering anyone, but they can kill your animals on your property and it's all fine and dandy with the Powers That Be.

What's the problem? All that power and responsibility and no consequences.

Just like the Constitution says...

Do police officers carry “boomerang bullets” these days?

How does one shoot a *charging* dog in the back of the head?

I’m surprised they didn’t tase the dog’s owner, beat him black and blue, and then arrest him on a whole host of charges. The police are just getting lazy these days!

Clearly, Mr. Deputy has “boomerang bullets”.

He can shoot charging dogs in the back of their heads.

Suppose, when the targets of choice move from dogs to people, that such boomerang bullets will be used on conservatives and good Freepers?

Tomorrow has come and gone.

Recall the marine who was shot in Tucson for no good reason a few months back.

Nice shooting indeed. It’s extremely difficult to shoot a dog charging at you in the back of his head.

Doubtless a union contract term — this has nothing to do with a property damage civil claim which in the case of pets can be steep in these modern days, and the tax payer eats the cost of attempting to defend then paying the lawyer of the aggrieved party. Then the police chief shrugs and says his hands are tied.

That looks like a pitbull. If it is, I can’t blame the deputy.

A few years ago, a dang dog was running deer through one of my tobacco fields, instead of shooting the dog I shot in front of him to run him off. Killed him dead, when I went down where he was I noticed I had hit a rock, a chip of rock hit the dog in the head and killed him. But in this case, I would say he was putting the dog out of pain.

“Nobody wants to shoot a dog, but things like this are going to happen,” Harrison said. “Please put yourself in the deputy’s position. If you had been standing there, what would you have thought when the dog comes out charging towards you?”

So, I guess we are to assume that if some unarmed person came up to them and was "yapping" or perhpas cursing them out, these "Big Tough," (Supposedly) trained, PIGS (sorry, but while I respect most LEO's, I have NONE for those who shoot dogs) would do the same and shoot the individual?

Fer Christ sake, there were TWO of them and I also assume (as to most police) more than likely had mace/pepper spray and/or tasers?

WTF is up with these WUSS, GIRLY-GUY, JACK-BOOTED, Quick on the Trigger, THUGS, always resorting to (First) shooting dogs and never try to take any other evasive action--like maybe what most people do, call the dog with a friendly gesture and they respond (99% of the time) with a wagging of the tail and licking your hand--before opening up with guns blazing?

These BASTARDS ought to not only loose their jobs, but should be held (legally) accountable for damages and not be able to hide behind their "immunity!"
