Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) -- Rick Santorum started the new year riding the wave of a strong finish in the last major poll before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses and looked to rally his supporters in a series of events on Sunday.
There were few surprises in Saturday night's Des Moines Register poll -- front-runners Mitt Romney and Ron Paul finished 1-2 as they had in other polls during the week. But the Register poll showed Santorum, who just weeks ago had registered only in single digits, pulling ahead of rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry.

In his day, preserving the union was the hot issue, not a balanced budget.
I don’t see Santorum there. Says Newt is 90 percent lifetime (as of 1998), while Paul is 19 percent lifetime.
Wouldn’t it be better to get lifetime ACU rankings for all three, rather then cherrypicking a year?
Don’t get us started on how much of tyrant Lincoln was.
If we want a model of Conservative governance, lets look at someone who wasn’t assassinated. Coolidge is probably the best. Speak less, do little, but what you do do, do.
Mylife didn’t ask if Santorum had fought. He asked if Santorum had commanded troops. This argument is really specious, however.
Mylife asked if anyone knew Santorum’s policy statements and I listed 3 off the top of my head. I’m sure there are many more. Mylife has not been paying attention to the race to even ask such a question. It does not improve one’s postition to change the argument.
“1998 was the last year that Gingrich, Paul and Santorum were all in Congress.”
I’ll take OJ trial for 200, Alex.
The answer is no. Santorim was a run-of-the-mill Senator. No e executive experience. No business experience. The last stand for Evangelicals.
Perhaps your comment would be more appropriate if directed to the person who asked the question.
I just don’t see Santorums positions as standing out from any of the other candidates.
I just answered the question with that common understanding in mind.
Don't know if the poster meant it that way, but the litmus test of commanding troops blocks way too many people from the Presidency IMO.
>>>mylife: Has Santorum ever balanced a budget? Commanded troops?<<<
>>>afraidfortherepublic: Did Abraham Lincoln ever command troops, or balance a budget before being elected President?<<<
Notes on Abraham Lincolns Military Service
The year 1832 saw the start of what is known in history as the Black-Hawk War. Black Hawk, age 67, was the leader of the Sauk and Fox tribes. He had crossed over the Mississippi River into Illinois in violation of a treaty that he and his people were to remain west of the river.
Governor Reynolds of Illinios called for 400 thirty- day volunteers from Sangamon County to serve in the state militia. Enter Abraham Lincoln. At the time, he was working in Offutts failing store. The time seemed ripe for a change. He and other men from the area, mostly Clarys Grove boys, signed up. To his surprise, Lincoln was voted captain of the company. He was very pleased but didnt know a thing about soldiering. He didnt even know the orders and commands common to soldier life. His first verbal order to his troops resulted in a reply of Go to hell.
Lincoln and his men marched a lot, slept on the damp ground, and ate lousy food. They didnt fight in any battles but they did arrive after the fact of a fight in which they found 12 dead white men bloodied and scalped. Lincoln also got into some other troubles. He was arrested for shooting off a firearm in the camp and was held in custody for a day. At a subsequent court-martial, Lincoln was ordered to carry a wooden sword for 2 days.
Lincoln re-enlisted twice after the first term of service ended. He was a private both times. He still saw no action. He was a soldier and did what soldiers do and have always done-marched, worked on details, survived/endured inclimate weather, and complained. Yet on a much later day and time in his life, Lincoln became teary-eyed when he talked about the common soldier. After he was President, he also commented that nothing in his life up to that point had ever given him as much satisfaction as having been chosen by his peers at that time as their captain.

Santorum, of course, never bothered himself with military service, nor have any of the other candidates, except Perry and Paul.
I was donating to Cain several times a WEEK. I still haven’t put anything into Santorum’s coffer, because my wallet fingers are still burnt from Cain. But I will donate if he does super well in Iowa. And I think he will.
Look, FReepers: we have to support SOMEONE over Romney. A lot of you say it HAS to be Newt, but it doesn’t.
1. Conservatives dislike Romney. They won’t vote for him unless they HAVE to. They would prefer another nominee.
2. If the last primary states still have Romney versus Non-Romney on the ballot, non-Romney will win. If non-Romney is Santorum, he will win. This is why we wish Santorum to do well in the early primaries.
3. If Santorum is our nominee, there will be many non-Obama voters of all parties who will vote for a stick of gum over Obama, especially those whom Obama has hurt (pretty much all of us). All Republican voters will vote for Santorum. Santorum will lose us the gay vote. Which would not have gone to Newt anyway.
4. Many Americans have learned through the MSM to hate Newt. They don’t even know who Santorum is. And Santorum is Italian, which is nearly Hispanic. Well, kinda? But a new person to learn about is an open book for most people, and more attractive than Newt to them.
Santorum could win the presidency. We’d have a decent man and loyal conservative in the White House. We wouldn’t be knuckle-biting all weekend, wondering what our President might do or say that’s crazy come Monday (a la Newt).
Santorum will make presidential decisions on the basis of what is good for the country and aligned with the Constitution. Newt will make his on the basis of what will make Newt look like a genius and yet still aligned with the Constitution.
Santorum will say, “Get out of here!” and have an intern who waltzed into his office flicking her bikini thong straps at him fired, and investigated for a possible “honey trap” from enemies foreign or domestic. Do I have to spell out what Newt’s response would be?
Impressive info on Lincoln.
Maybe not, but he is the most pro-life candidate out there. He walks the walk and always has.
#2 He’s not afraid to back Israel and stand up to Iran. I haven’t heard that from any of the others. He certainly distances himself from Paul, in that regard.
I could go on, but I won’t. I’m watching the Packers, and I need to move closer to the TV to keep track of the score. LOL.
probably not.
What exactly had Obama accomplished prior to ‘o8?
that’s too bad.
The negatives for the others are far more negative than this.
And, of course, the negatives for our current president outnumber Santorum’s negatives in an exponential fashion.
Absolutely!
Thanks for the history lesson.
Bush managed to balance the budget every year in Texas. He sure didn't take that experience with him to Washington, did he?
Santorum is the most consistently conservative candidate in this race. I haven't really committed to anyone at this point, but I'm hoping he walks away with Iowa. If it is Gingrich, Perry or Santorum, I will donate and work for them. Anybody but Romney.
